Responding to a Need

You may have heard about the current situation in Tucson regarding the influx of Central American asylum seekers. Interfaith groups from Tucson have offered to assist Catholic Community Services (CCS) who is coordinating the new arrivals to reach relatives in the U.S.

Currently, St. Pius X Parish is providing a place for those who are being sent to Tucson (over a hundred this week!). In addition, Casa Alitas, an agency of CCS, also helps feed, serve a meal, and transport persons to the bus depot.

There are many ways to help! The Newman Social Justice Committee would like to respond to the needs of our brothers/sisters and invite you to volunteer to be a translator, prepare food, serve a meal, donate food items such as granola bars, pop up tuna cans, water, small juice packs, socks, or small travel fleece blankets (for traveling on the bus). Donations for backpacks are also welcome. At this point, no clothing donations except jackets are needed.

How can you provide immediate help?

On Thursday morning (Oct 11th) 11AM-4PM we will prepare a meal of rice/beans/chicken at the Newman Center for 100+ refugees.  If you are able, please come and help prepare the meal. The meal will need to be ready/delivered by 6PM to St. Pius Church. We will also prepare some food packs and welcome donations of water/juice/granola bars/Pedialyte/milk etc.!

Volunteers are also needed to do intake forms at Casa Alitas. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, there are some upcoming orientation times.
  • Friday the 12th @ 4:00pm
  • Tuesday the 16th @ 11:00am
  • Thursday the 18th @ 12:00pm
  • Wednesday the 24th @ 4:00pm
Contact: Katherine Rosa Smith at (520) 591-6390 for details

Our immediate contact is Teresa Cavendish but as you can imagine she is swamped with phone calls. If you wish more information, contact me at srangelica@uacatholic.org.

Thank you for your help!

In Christ,
Sr. Angelica Velez, O.P., Michael, Joji and the Newman Social Justice Committee

P.S. - We encourage ministry teams to take action in your ministries and respond as a group.
