Resurrection Voices

Beer & Hymns

Beer & Hymns officially began at the Greenbelt Festival (a festival of arts, faith and justice held annually in the United Kingdom) in 2006. One evening over a beer, after running out of Beatles songs, a group of three musicians started singing classic hymns and discovered that people of all ages, creeds, colors and beliefs enjoyed the singing of the great old Wesley tunes and the majestic words that went with them. From this first event, Beer & Hymns began popping up all over the UK and spread quickly to the US, as well.

Our own Martin Luther was not only a theologian and reformer, but also a musician and a composer. A large part of Luther’s reformation of the church was bringing a singing role to the community. A strong advocate of music for all to sing in worship and be taught in schools, Luther found value in teaching the faith through religious texts he put to music. Often, he used folk tunes that were familiar to the common people so that they might learn these songs quickly and memorize them.

Luther was also known to enjoy a good beer now and then. In an age when water was not always safe to drink, beer was drunk by everyone and accepted as nutritionally safe and sometimes even medicinal. (Luther’s wife, Katie, was known for her ability to brew a very fine beer!) It was at the time of the Reformation when beer began to be brewed with hops — and not only with herbs. The pubs were places where scholars and townspeople gathered to discuss and debate theology, philosophy and life in general.  We can only imagine that there was undoubtedly some robust singing in between some very intense conversations of the day!

Matt Stein and I attended the 2015 Worship Jubilee in Atlanta, Georgia, where we experienced our first Beer & Hymns event. We were so excited to bring this idea home to our community and are grateful to Steve Berger, owner of Beer Snobs Ale and Eats, for supporting it right from the beginning. Beer Snobs is a great venue and Steve has been very gracious in hosting us for several events in the past few years. Thank you, Steve!

We hope you will join us for our next Beer & Hymns – Oct. 21 – 4:00 pm at Beer Snobs Ale and Eats, 122 Cottonwood Ave, in downtown Hartland. Bring your family, bring your friends. Enjoy a beer or root beer and a bite to eat while we raise our voices in song together!

Thinking about joining Church of the Resurrection?

Mark your calendars for October 21. During Adult Education (10:15 a.m.) we’ll explore what it means to become a member/disciple of our congregation. We’ll share what the ministries of COR can bring to your life and what gifts you can bring to our congregation.

EVERYONE is invited to attend this class—in fact, long time folks are encouraged to come. They can share more stories about life at COR than your "here less than a year" pastor can.

If you are considering making COR your "official" church home and family, please let us know by contacting office@churchoftheresurrection.org

Peace,

.

The Word for Your Week…
The questions relate to the highlighted passage for the day.

 The Prayer of the Week
Almighty and ever-living God, increase our faith in you, that leaving what lies behind and reaching out for what lies ahead, we may follow the way of your commandments and receive your crown of everlasting joy. This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Sunday, October 14:         Amos 5:6-15        Hebrews 4:12-16    Mark 10:17-31
The prophet Amos makes clear that God is concerned about the poor and needy. How do you hear God’s call to “hate evil and love good; establish justice in the gate?” How might you live out this command?

Monday, October 15:         Psalm 39        Job 26:1-14        Revelation 7:9-17
In this psalm David seeks both forgiveness and wisdom from God. Which do you think is more important? Which is harder to ask for, forgiveness or wisdom? Why?

Tuesday, October 16:         Psalm 39        Job 28:12-29:10        Revelation 8:1-5
This passage lifts up the Old Testament practice and imagery of using incense during prayer—let my prayer rise before you like incense…  Do you have any prayer rituals that help you to focus? How is it helpful? If you don’t, might you be willing to add a ritual to your prayer life?

Wednesday, October 17:     Psalm 39         Job 32:1-22        Luke 16:19-31
This story serves as a warning to those who live the ‘good life’ now, but who take no notice that others are poor and sick. It doesn’t occur to them that they could offer comfort and help to the needy at their gates. Does this story frighten you or motivate you? Can the story do both?

Thursday, October 18:     Psalm 104:1-9        Job 36:1-16        Romans 15:7-13
In this passage, Paul reminds us that the good news of the gospel is not to be limited to Jews alone, but that it is to be extended to Gentiles, as well. How do Christians/churches sometimes limit sharing the good news to others?

Friday, October 19:         Psalm 104:1-9        Job 37:1-24        Revelation 17:1-18
How often do you reflect, as the psalmist does, on God’s creativity? How does such reflection affect your relationship with God? How might you become better at the ‘habit’ of noticing God’s great and wondrous works?

Saturday, October 20:         Psalm 104:1-9        Job 39:1-30        Luke 22:24-30
Jesus’ teaching continues his frequent theme of servanthood. Here he reminds his disciples that he has come among them as one who serves. As Jesus’ follower, what does such service mean to you? Are you willing to give up the status of one being served? How do you live this from day to day?
