This newsletter provides information on upcoming courses and programmes provided by Southside Community Training Network (SCTN), Southside Partnership and its hosted projects. We will also feature courses and events organised by other providers and community organisations in the county.

Spunout.ie Training Session 'The Impact of Social Media on Young People's Mental Health'
 

We would like to thank Kiki Martire from Spunout.ie for delivering a engaging session for Southside Community Training Network on 'The Impact of Social Media on Young People's Mental Health' on Oct 24th 2018. We had a very interesting discussion with representatives from local community groups and organisations which work with young people in the DLR area.

SCTN Autumn Courses
Spunout.ie Courses in DLR - 

Southside Community Training Network will be running two more workshops in collaboration with Spunout.ie this autumn:
  • Nov 20th 2018 10am-1pm at Mounttown Community Facility: ‘Online Safety’. Read more here.
  • Nov 27th 2018 10am-1pm at Shanganagh Park House: 'How to Engage With Young People Online'. Read more here
These courses are aimed at professionals and volunteers working in DLR to support young people.

Upcoming Training with the SCTN and the DLR Public Participation Network

Southside Community Training Network and DLR Public Participation Network are currently collaborating to offer a number of training sessions to community organisations in DLR this autumn. The last two sessions for this term will cover grant writing & fundraising:

To be eligible for a place with the SCTN you need to be working for a local community group / organisation with a social inclusion focus in DLR. If your group is located in DLR, but has a different focus, please contact Laura Howe from the DLR PPN at laura@dlrppn.ie to check if you can book a place through the PPN. 

DLR PPN will be offering a few additional training sessions this autumn. Please check the DLR PPN website to find out more.  

 
Southside Community Training Network -  Spring Term

We are currently in the process of planning for our Southside Community Training Network Spring programme. We previously published a training survey, but if you still have suggestions for training topics and / or training areas for us, please get in touch directly with Lisa Sieger-Jamison, the SCTN co-ordinator, at lisa.sieger@sspship.ie. Women Transforming Communities Conference



As part of the Women and Leadership programme the Southside Partnership Women's Programme and women4women network want to invite you to a Conference on Women Transforming Communities. Hear from 4 inspiring women who made positive changes in their communities. The conference includes lunch and an afternoon workshop. Wed 14 November 2018 from 09:30 – 14:30, Royal Marine Hotel. SafeTALK Training



SafeTALK is a half-day training programme that prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Following a safeTALK workshop you will be more willing and able to perform an important helping role for persons with thoughts of suicide.How does safeTALK help prevent suicide? SafeTALK suicide alert helpers are trained to:
• Move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss or avoid signs of suicide
• Identify people who have thoughts of suicide
• Apply the TALK steps to connect a person with suicidal thoughts to people and agencies that can help.

This training is suitable for everyone over 18 years of age who wants to help prevent suicide and become suicide alert. Pathfinder



This FREE Pathfinder Training helps you to take a fresh look at your potential and the changes you would like to make for the future. The 3 workshops cover: Building self confidence, identifying skills
deciding on the change/s you would like to make, creating a plan for moving forward and looking at challenges you may face and how to overcome them. The Women's Voice Group



The Women's Voice Group is a new group for any women who live in the Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown area.  We would like to give women a space so that they can come together and imagine a better community for themselves, their families and their environment. Applying for Jobs Online Workshop
Southside Partnership will be running 2-hour workshops on Applying For Jobs Online 2-hour workshops. Places are limited and must be booked in advance. Migrant Women In Focus



WEMIN is a new programme for migrant and refugee women and, in some aspects, also for Irish women. It is run by the Southside Partnership Women’s Programme and is supported by women4women network dlr. It will empower women to play an active role in their community. Find out more here

AONTAS STAR Awards 2019 - Nominations Now Open 

Celebrating the positive contribution that adult learning initiatives make to adult learners, local communities and wider society in Ireland. We are delighted to announce that nominations for the AONTAS STAR Awards 2019 are now open and we’ve already had a great response.
Categories
For 2019, nominations are invited under four categories - Adult Learning Initiatives that Support:
•    Health and Wellbeing
•    Third Level Access and Engagement
•    Social Inclusion
•    Sustainable Employment

Alternative Pathways to UCD Day 2018

UCD Access & Lifelong Learning are hosting a day so attendees can explore different flexible options to become a UCD student with a QQI-FET (FETAC) qualification, through the part-time Access Courses, as a mature student, or as a part-time open learning student. Attendees will have an opportunity to explore options to gain a place at university, meet current students, ask questions about programmes of studies and attend taster sessions on different subjects. Thursday 22nd November 2018 between 10am and 3pm in UCD Access & Lifelong Learning Centre, Level 1 James Joyce Library Building, UCD Belfield, Dublin 4. interested should be registered by Tuesday 20th November 2018 at 5pm. College Awareness Week 2018

College Awareness Week is Ireland’s national celebration of the benefits of a post-secondary education, aimed at students, parents and the public. Carry out an event which aims to help your students become college-ready it runs form 19th-24th November.

Understanding Youth Mental Health Training
 
This 1-day workshop is designed for those who work or volunteer with young people. 
Understanding youth mental health (1 day) covers
  • What is Jigsaw?
  • What is mental health and how does it develop?
  • Adolescence and emerging adulthood
  • The current landscape of youth mental health
  • Signs of mental health difficulty and safety
  • Local supports and services

Non Violence Resistance (NVR) Programme

This is a free 8-week programme which will commence in Ballyogan FRC on Thursday 22nd November 2018 at 10am-12pm. This short programme empowers parents and carers by providing practical support to regain authority within their home and challenge the very specific issue of child to parent violence.

Computers for Job Searching Course

New part-time morning course starting November 2018 in Loughlinstown
DDLETB ADULT EDUCATION SERVICE
Learn how to: Search for jobs online, register with job sites, create CV’s and cover letters, build confidence with email, explore social media. For more details phone 01 204 3605 or 204 3676. Free to eligible participants. Your Social Welfare payments will not be affected (subject to DSP approval).
Woodlands for Health 

Woodlands For Health is an 8-Week FREE walking programme to encourage mental wellbeing through physical activity in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. Weekly guided social walks in a woodland setting will be taking place on Wednesdays from 11am – 2pm during October and November. Free transport provided to the locations.

FREE Computer Classes 

There will be free computer classes taking place in the Adult Education Services Dundrum. These classes are free for anyone on a social welfare payment, with a medical card or to anyone who has not completed a leaving certificate. The courses will start in November and January. 
  • Tuesday mornings for beginners 10am – 12am,  20th November 2018 for 5 weeks & 8th January 2019 for 10 weeks,
  • Thursday afternoons, Improvers 1.30 pm – 3.30pm, 22nd November 2018 for 5 weeks  & 10th January for 10 weeks
