The Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action's Annual Meeting, 17-19 October, Nairobi, Kenya

Every year, the Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action convenes practitioners, academics, donors, and policy makers working on the issue of child protection in humanitarian action to exchange the latest learning and evidence; introduce recent standards and guidelines; and network with colleagues. This year, the Annual Meeting follows the Alliance-INEE Roundtable. 17 October will feature a carousel of working group and task force resources as well as sessions on the Alliance’s strategic plan/work plan, evidence-based programming and localization. Working Group and Task Force meetings convene 18-19 October. Participate remotely via Facebook or Twitter.

Revising and updating the Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action

In July and August 2018, over 1200 child protection workers met in 47 locations to discuss the draft revised CPMS. 17 countries and one regional office joined the consultations. 245 children and youth took the time to share their ideas and feedback. It's not easy to summarize all the different feedback, but here are a few key points:

  • People like the structure and how similar it will feel.
  • Keep the language and concepts simple.
  • Have a comprehensive glossary and list of acronyms.
  • Ensure that the family and community are strengthened through our work.
  • Much more should be done in the preparedness phase.
  • Highlight the linkages between the various Standards.
  • If Standards focus on the what, show us where to find the “how” (i.e. guidance)
  • Some of the measurement is difficult to understand and carry out.
Next steps: We'll share all your ideas and feedback, together with the results of the online survey with the revision teams for each standard. In early 2019, we expect to have a final version ready for editing and design. Read more >
