Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
12 October, 2018

We have been spending the last couple of weeks looking at the acronym SAIL which is being used to this year to remind our staff and students of actions we should be taking to encourage and enhance the community of Dalat. The first letter, S, stands for “stop the complaining”. The second letter, A, stands for “assume the best”. The third letter, I, which is the one we are focusing on this week, stands for “ignore the comparisons.”

Teddy Roosevelt, the famous president of the United States made the wise observation “that comparison is the thief of joy.” I am sure we have all experienced this at one point in our lives. We are happy with something but then we look around and as we compare it to something or someone else the joy leaves us even as we are doing this. How often have we been content or happy in a situation only to lose that because we begin to make comparisons with others. It can be about so many different aspects of our life: wealth, career success, social status, body image, your house, parenting ability, godliness, intelligence, abilities, pretty much everything about your life.

Unfortunately this is happening so much more in today’s world. The advertising industry feeds on this human characteristic and uses it to feed our fears and steal our joy to sell more products. Add to that social media, which has made comparisons a way of life and constant part of our daily life and it is no wonder that anxiety, stress, and depression is at all-time highs for our teenagers.

Ultimately comparisons is destructive to us and those around us in so many ways. You simply will never be fully content and joyful until you stop comparing yourself to others. So how do we stop this comparison treadwheel we are on?
  • An important step in today’s world is to control your social media diet. It is simply a fact that the less time you spend on social media the happier you are.
  • Stop comparing your weaknesses to other’s people’s strengths. The ironic thing is that they are comparing their weaknesses to your strengths and both of you are unhappy and discouraged.
  • Develop the habit of gratitude in your life. It is something that can be developed and become a habit in your life. Being grateful for what you have and who you are is the perfect antidote to the destructive trap of comparison.
As with many other aspects of life we have studied together the general default setting is for us to play the comparison game and to play it a lot. If we are going to truly be content and with that have more joy in our lives we simply need to stop playing the game. Take our ball and walk away and as we do a smile will begin to creep across your face.

Have a great weekend,

HS Drama Production
Murder Mystery

고등학생 드라마 제작 - 살인 추리극
高中年度歌舞剧
Murder, mayhem, and madness fill the stage for nearly two hours of exciting intrigue, plot twists, and a spectrum of quirky-to-conventional characters. The high school drama department presents its fall production, To Kill a Murderer: A Mystery in Three Acts, making its premier debut in Harbor Hall on Wednesday, October 17, at 6:30 p.m. with a special dinner theater option! The second (and final) performance on Thursday, October 18, begins at 7 p.m. (no dinner option). Tickets for both nights are RM10 and are available starting October 1 from the main office or from Mrs. Horton.

The Thursday-only dinner theater option is an add-on opportunity provided by our junior class with set meals starting at RM8; to browse your options or to place an order, click here: https://goo.gl/forms/u2F54K9uQPxR8b4a2.

Payment for all pre-ordered meals must be given to Mrs. Horton by 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16, or the order won't be placed. Prepaid dinners will be delivered to Harbor Hall at 6 p.m. for pre-show enjoyment. Dining patrons will be seated at tables near the stage, while drama-only patrons will enjoy traditional row seating in the tiered levels.

From Kids 4 Kids will sell baked goods before Thursday’s show and at intermission to raise money for local needs beyond our school community. What a delicious way to support this meaningful cause!
