Turning West Updates
LONG TERM SUPPLY PASTOR

Admittedly it’s a title that doesn’t impress, huh?  It’s something less than an “interim pastor,” it is the term used to describe the role of a pastor appointed by the bishop, with the approval of a local congregation’s leadership, to exercise pastoral leadership in the period until a new pastor is called by the congregation.  A “supply pastor” is more modestly expected to preach and preside at the Sunday worship of a congregation and to exercise pastoral care of other sorts on a limited, bare-bones basis until an interim pastor is named.
I’m happy to be able to serve in the role as Mt. Carmel’s official long term supply pastor for the next couple of months until along with my younger brother Richard, freshly retired as interim pastor of Newport Harbor Lutheran Church.  Richard, and his wife Cyndi, are newly arrived in SLO where they will be residing while looking for a permanent home in the area.  You will be meeting them these last two Sundays in October when Richard preaches and presides at worship. When Ruth and I return from our trip to the Midwest, I’ll be back in the pulpit for All Saints Sunday, Nov. 4 and likely the next week. At which point we’ll begin alternating worship leadership. In addition to leading worship, we’ve been asked to spend up to eight hours a week between the two of us. We’ll be visiting the sick and hospitalized, assisting staff and lay leadership where pastoral involvement may be needed, and simply providing pastoral presence around the church on a limited, prioritized basis.  Obviously this is a minimal involvement on our part but will assure that our congregation is pastorally “covered” at least on a contingency basis and can begin the transition toward being ready to welcome an interim pastor sometime after the New Year.
Richard will be introducing himself to you in the November newsletter as well as at worship in these weeks to come, and many of you already know Ruth and me who have been members of Mt. Carmel for just over nine years now.  It’s been good to experience the way in which folks have been stepping forward to take up various ministry tasks in the absence of pastoral leadership, and Richard’s and my successful work as supply pastors will rely on this continuing and even expanding in many areas of our life together.  But please know that we welcome you to call upon us as needed, are open to your input and feedback, and will respond as we are able to the best of our abilities.  Remember too that this is a temporary, very part-time arrangement and that we’re just two old white guys with the same genes but, thankfully, quite different personalities.  We’re looking forward to the adventures ahead!

Cheers!

Iglesia luterana Santa Cruz
The weatherman predicted RAIN in the near future!
That's our que at Mount Carmel to replenish the pantry at Iglesia Luterana Santa Cruz.
The Social Action Team invite you to join us in our annual food collection for Santa Cruz, our Mission Church in Santa Maria.
Following are the Sunday dates that we will bring specific items to replenish the pantry.

October 21 - beans, Pinto or pink
October 28 - rice, long grain white
November 4 - flour, wheat or masa
November 11 - canola oil
November 18 - laundry detergent
God blesses each of us with so much bounty let us pass it on.
Lets fill the grocery cart each week to overflowing.
This small Mission Church in Santa Maria serves Spanish-speaking field workers. When the weather is bad they can't get into the field to work so they don't make the salary to feed their families. Mount Carmel and other ELCA churches in our conference help by supplying their Pantry. Pastor Esteban Salazar and Angie let us know what is needed. The Social Action Team would like to have the pantry supplied by Thanksgiving Day.
Let's fill the grocery cart to overflowing each week with supplies. Your help has always been fabulous! Thank you for joining us again this year. Mount Carmel has been blessed to be a blessing.
