OCTOBER 10, 2018

This is Fire Prevention Week and Month!

Going to Sunday School class, you smell smoke coming from the Mechanical Room near Conference Room 105 (a fire can happen anywhere - at work, at home, even at church!).
What do you do?

     A. Grab a fire extinguisher, pull the pin and throw it into the closet to put out the fire.

     B.  Be calm and wait for the Safety Team, Ushers or someone on Council to tell you what to do.

     C.  Alert others of the fire, call 9-1-1 and
expeditiously get out of the building by the nearest exit.

     D.  Scream while you run outside the building knocking down anyone in your way.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, threats, and emotional/psychological abuse.  One in three women (and one in four men) have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  On average, 20 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States—more than 10 million women and men a year.

Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality.  Physical violence is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior as part of a much larger, systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence can have economic impact and result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and even death.  The devastating consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime.

Please visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s website at
http://www.ncadv.org/ for more fact sheets, membership information and valuable resources

If you are in crisis, contact The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or https://www.thehotline.org/.

On October 7th, the congregation was asked to nominate two persons for Council (term 2019-2021).  Ballots were received from 111 members who nominated 65 different persons.  The top two nominees accepted.  Now, a panel of outgoing Council members will nominate two more Council members, also for a three-year term, and the Youth Group will nominate a representative for a one-year term to Council.  The congregation will learn the names of all five nominees when all are known and will ratify their election at our next congregation meeting on December 2nd.

Lutheran World Relief - Quilts

The Quilting ladies have been busy.  Last year they made 59 quilts and this year they have made around 70 (they're still working on some)!  These quilts will be displayed during service on October 21st and blessed before they are packed to be sent to destinations in need including other countries.  Lutheran World Relief often responds to a disaster with Quilts and Care Kits working through local community partners or international organizations.

REFORMATION SUNDAY

October 28, 2018

On Halloween of 1517, a German monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Church. These 95 Theses expressed his concerns over corruption found in the Catholic church. One of his primary concerns was the church selling “indulgences” to people in order to release them from having to serve penitence for their sins. An act which he considered to be people trying to buy their way into heaven. This act opened up a debate with religious scholars of the time that eventually lead to the Protestant Reformation.

Matthew 8: 23-27

23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke him, saying, "LORD, save us! We're going to drown!" 26He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the
waves obey him!"

Getting ready for Hurricane Michael

MICHAEL is one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the U.S.  Fortunately it is weakening so SC will not feel the strongest impact.  However, forecasters with the National Weather Service believe we will have heavy rains, gusty winds, tornadoes and flash flooding beginning early Thursday morning and throughout the day with potential for power outages.  We're still cleaning up and recovering from Hurricane Florence which struck several weeks ago followed by severe flooding in the Eastern parts of SC.   Our hope is that everyone is prepared.

A prayer for those in the storms path

Merciful God, when the storms rage and threaten to overtake us, awaken our faith to know the power of your peace. Deliver us from our fear and ease our anxiety. Help us to endure the time of uncertainty and give us strength to face the challenges ahead. Give us the assurance of your presence even in this time so that we can cling to your promise of hope and life shown to us through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
