the Summer got to a glorious end for the Cryogenics Community with the 27ICEC-ICMC2018 in Oxford, a successful conference that enchanted the attendees with a fascinating location. The CSE members convened before the opening for the annual General Meeting. We collected for you the most interesting news.

4th General Meeting
The yearly General Meeting took place on September 3rd in Oxford, before the opening reception of the 27ICEC-ICMC2018 conference. At the GM the secretary reported on the activities of 2018 and the treasurer communicated that the finances of the association are in good health.
Agnieszka Piotrowska and John Weisend presented respectively the candidacy of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and of the European Spallation Source to host the European Cryogenic Days in 2019. The decision on the location will soon be made by the CSE board.
Ronald Dekker resigned his position as Board member and the assembly elected Tonny Benschop, who will be the new CSE treasurer. We wish to thank Ronald for his work during the past four years and for his commitment as new member of the CSE advisory council. We warmly welcome Tonny in the CSE Board!
27ICEC-ICMC2018
The 27th International Cryogenic Engineering Conference combined with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference 2018 was held in the beautiful city of Oxford, UK, July 3-7 2018. Close to 492 attendees were registered coming from 31 countries of which about half from Europe (234, of which 127 UK). In the program were 374 papers in oral and poster presentations of which 106 of China (!) and 135 of Europe (USA 21). Introductory short courses were given on Monday September 3 on cryostat design, multi-layer insulation, superconducting materials, and on “Top Tips for Best Paper”. Technical visits were organized on Friday September 7 to Oxford University, Birmingham University, Oxford Instruments + Polar Technology, and to Science Vale (visiting Culham, UTC, and Harwell-RAL). The opening session of the conference was in the historical Sheldonian Theatre built in the 1660’s (see picture above), whereas the conference sessions were organized in The Examination Schools of the University of Oxford. As part of the opening session, the ICEC Mendelssohn Award was handed to Fons de Waele, professor emeritus of Eindhoven University of Technology, who later in the conference also received the certificate for the Honorary Membership of the Cryogenics Society of Europe that was awarded to him at the CSE General Meeting of 2017 in Karlsruhe.
A variety of interesting topics was covered in five invited plenary talks: Fons de Waele gave his Mendelssohn lecture on Challenges of Cryocoolers (discussing the route towards the “invisible” cryocooler); Glyn Kirby of CERN and Oxford alumnus gave a talk on Next Generation Materials for Future Magnet development at CERN; Barry Fuller of the University College London gave a talk on cryobiology with the intriguing title Stopping Biological Time-Merging Biology and Cryonics in Cryobiology; Neil Mitchell of ITER discussed the Lessons Learned from ITER Magnets: Material Developments and Industrialization (one of the lessons being that in some of the conductor and coil developments not enough time was available for test phases); Finally Tiemo Winkler of the University of Twente presented the developments in the EU EcoSwing Project (realizing the world’s first superconducting generator actually installed in a wind turbine).

DH Industries are proud to announce that the BOG management system for the "Clean Jacksonville" bunkerbarge has been tested successfully. Six StirLNG4 Cryogenerators have been installed on board of the 2,200 m3 LNG bunker barge to re-liquefy the Boil Off Gas. During the final gas trials all units have performed perfectly and as expected. During the tests, the units maintained the operational pressure within the GTT membrane tanks below the given setpoints. Here you may find more details.
BCC Safety Manual
The 5th Edition of the Cryo Safety Manual of the British Cryogenics Council is now available in hardcopy as well as in digital version. This version contains updated legislative and technical information reflecting the current standards and expectations concerning health and safety issues in cryogenics.
The BCC members can download the Safety Manual for free (annual membership fees starting from 10£ per year). At present and for a limited time the Manual is offered to non-members for 10£.

New CSE Member
We would like to welcome the Karlsruher Institute of Technology (KIT) among our members. KIT pursues application-oriented innovations, as well as fundamental research in cryogenics. The areas of interest of the institute include nuclear fusion, tritium technology, vacuum science and technology, new electric power equipment, and high field magnets. KIT develops
superconductors, cryogenic components and circuits, and provides the characterization of low temperature structural materials; moreover, it offers a number of lectures and training courses for his student, as well as testing and research services.
The membership fee for universities and research institutions, as non-profit entities, is a bargain! Consider joining us and allowing students and personnel full access to the restricted area of the CSE website.
