Violence Against Women and Girls Newsletter

Welcome to the October 2018 newsletter!

As we edge into autumn it’s time to start planning how we will take part in the 16 Days of Action against Gender-based Violence. Each year, from 25 November to 10 December, we use this opportunity to raise awareness of our work to end VAWG and come together to celebrate our achievements. This year’s theme is ending gender-based violence in the world of work, so it’s a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of VAWG in your workplace. We always take a partnership approach to our work, so if you’re interested in partnering on any events or activities, please get in touch here.

Haringey’s VAWG Training Standards

Haringey’s VAWG Partnership have developed VAWG Training Standards to provide a framework for tackling VAWG in Haringey through training. The Training Standards is formed of five levels, from an introductory level to specialist, advanced modules, and will ensure that all VAWG training in the borough is high quality. We are currently piloting the training modules, which will be rolled out more widely in November/December.

We have ambitious aims for the Training Standards and as part of this work we will be developing a ‘Train the Trainer’ programme to support the delivery of this training. If you’re interested in finding out more or being involved please get in touch
here.

Celebrating Survivors, Celebrating Services

Haringey’s VAWG team is running an event on 6 December to celebrate our survivors and local services. As part of this we are looking for survivors to share their stories, anonymously and safely, to be part of the event. The event will be uplifting and not triggering and will focus on what helped survivors on their journey to recovery. Survivors can choose an image, an art work, a symbol to accompany their story, if a photo would not be appropriate or safe. The event will be open to our local VAWG services and survivors and invites will be going out soon.

If you can support us to speak to survivors, please get in touch
here.

Solace Women’s Aid North London Rape Crisis

Sophie Rowan, Senior ISVA - Complex Needs

North London Rape Crisis (NLRC) is run by Solace Women's Aid and offers free, confidential counselling, advocacy and helpline support to women and girls aged 13+ who have experienced any form of sexual violence at any time in their lives.

Sophie Rowan has joined the team as a specialised ISVA to improve access to services for women who face multiple challenges or disadvantages, in addition to their experience of sexual violence (SV). Independent Advocacy provides practical and emotional support for survivors of SV, particularly in relation to the reporting process and the criminal justice system.

Referrals will continue to go through the usual email address here and NLRC will assess and allocate cases.

Sophie is happy to come to team meetings and introduce herself if you would like to hear more about the service provision. Contact Sophie here.
