This Week at CBU

ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK 2018
The Office of Health & Prevention Services — in collaboration with the other units in Student Life — will host awareness activities everyday during the week of October 8-12. Monday begins with a Kickoff Breakfast from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Hall Breezeway. Activities will take place in Alfonso Dining Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for the remainder of the week. 
As we prepare for Fall Break, please remember to be safe and drink responsibly.

ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!
To get the CBU community in the Halloween spirit, the Recreation Office is proud to host Humans vs. Zombies. This event is open to all students, faculty, and staff — to register, please visit hvzsource.com/cbu. Informational Sessions will be held in Alfonso Dining Hall this week, Tuesday-Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. You must attend one of these sessions and sign a waiver in order to participate in the game. GOING LEGEND: YOUNG MEN'S SYMPOSIUM
Join panels of distinguished men in Spain Auditorium on Tuesday, October 9 as they engage in dialogue about topics that impact our communities. The purpose of this event is to equip young ages 14 and up with knowledge to create a vision, execute their plan, and become Legends in tomorrow's society. Organized b Jamal Threlkeld and promoted by Avyon Bess and Antoine Lever, the panelists will include Dr. Drake Dudley and Dr. Gerald Onuoha of Project DR.eam, Erik Henneghan, Trey Carter, Brent Hooks, and Corbin Carpenter, Esq. ONE LAST SWIM…

The Office of Recreation would like to thank the CBU community for enjoying the Canale Pool this season. Canale Pool will close for the season on Wednesday, October 10. If you have any questions, please contact Ian Boyd at iboyd@cbu.edu or visit him in Student Life.
RECYCLING FOR CHARITY 
The Sustainability Coalition will host its First Annual Recycling for Charity event in the Rozier Volleyball Court from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on October 11 and 12. Student organizations have nominated several charities, including St. Jude Children's Hospital, Church Health, VA Medical Foster Home, and more. Residents are invited to donate bagged recycling for the charity of their choice, and the charity with the most recycling donated will receive $100 funded by the Sustainability Faculty and Staff Committee! Recyclables must be clean and free of organic waste, and no glassware will be allowed for recycling. Recycling bags will also be passed out at lunchtime in Alfonso Dining Hall all week for any residents who want to make recycling donations. 
EAT, PRAY, DISCUSS 
Eat, Pray, Discuss is a group of faculty and staff that meets to eat, share Catholic traditions of prayer, and discuss relevant issues. All faculty and staff are invited to join them on Thursday, October 11 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. They will meet at Stritch Chapel for Mass followed by dinner. Please email cgrilli@cbu.edu if you plan to attend in order to estimate food. However, feel free to come even if you do not respond.
AVENUE 
The Catholic Student Association will host Avenue —  a time for fellowship and spiritual reflection that is open to everyone — at 8:00 p.m. in Stritch Chapel on Sundays, October 14, October 21, November 4, November 11, and November 18. 

September of Service Results!


Thanks to everyone who came out to the SOS Finale on Friday, and congratulations to everyone who served with us this year! In September of Service 2018, 533 volunteers served 1796 hours in our community. A volunteer hour in the state of Tennessee is worth $22, making this year’s September of Service contribution worth $39,512. Over September of Service’s seven years, 3796 volunteers have worked 12,311 hours, contributing the equivalent of $270,842 to non-profit agencies in our city. That’s AMAZING! Thank you to everyone who has volunteered with September of Service: 30 Days of Good Deeds. You have made such a big difference to so many people! See you next year!!

The Office of Recreation would like to thank everyone who came out to Intramural Volleyball Madness last week. The Intramural Staff (above) were the overall winners as they played against Theta Tau (2-0), Team Mango (2-1), and Team Rocket (2-0). Kudos

Veronica Braker (Chemical Engineering '92) will be a featured speaker at the FABTECH Expo in Atlanta on November 7 at the "Women of FABTECH Breakfast." Braker is vice president of Operations Performance Materials North America for BASF. 
Fadi Kiameh (Civil Engineering & Business Administration '86) was the subject of a Memphis Business Journal "Executive Profile" on October 5. Kiameh is currently an executive account manager for Johnson Controls and has earned the company's title of Lifetime Master of Sales for continuous exemplary business development performance. He is also a former member of the Gadomski School of Engineering Advisory Board. 
Nathan Luce (Civil Engineering '03) has been selected by Airport Business as one of its 2018 "Top 40 Under 40" honorees. Luce is manager of engineering and construction for the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. He was recently promoted to the position of director of procurement, a role he will begin in 2019.
William Rutledge (Information Technology Services) passed his CompTIA Sec+ certification last week. CompTIA Security+ is a global certification that incorporates best practices in hands-on trouble-shooting to ensure security professionals have practical security problem-solving skills.

Library Student Advisory Board

To help Plough Library better serve the CBU community, a Student Advisory Board is being created. This student-only, student-run board will work on library-related issues chosen by students. The goal is to provide a communication link between students and library staff, to provide feedback, and to act as a sounding board for proposed changes. Plough Library is seeking student volunteers who are invested in helping the library improve. Interested?

WOLF RIVER CONSERVANCY'S GREENWAY SOIREE
Help serve with the Wolf River Conservancy’s annual Greenway Soiree at Opera Memphis on November 10! Volunteers needed to help with event setup, welcoming guests, assisting with the auctions and event cleanup — there are multiple shifts volunteers can sign-up for. Sign up on Volunteer Odyssey. MEALS ON WHEELS 

Volunteers are sought for a Meals on Wheels service event in conjunction with MIFA (Memphis Inter-Faith Association), planned for November 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Thanksgiving season offers us no other better time or way to embody the Thanksgiving spirit — as well as the Lasallian spirit — than to serve fellow Memphians by delivering hot meals to their doors. The goal is to acquire 60 committed volunteers to participate in delivering meals to elderly seniors’ homes, with 20 volunteers designated as delivery drivers. Koinonia Student-Led Retreat


Koinonia, a  Greek word meaning "Community," is a peer-led, peer-planned, and peer-directed retreat that will be a wonderful experience open to all of our students. Join us for a stress free weekend as we discover ourselves, God, and others. The retreat will take place at St. Columba Retreat Center on November 2-4. Spots are filling up quickly! DIVINE VOICES GOSPEL CHOIR FALL 2018 CONCERT

Divine Voices Gospel Choir will present its Fall Concert on Thursday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the University Theater. Tickets are now available for purchase online at www.cbudivinevoices.org for $3 in advance and $2 with a student ID. Tickets at the door will be $5. Doors will open for the concert at 5:15 p.m. More information about Divine Voices Gospel Choir can be found at cbudivinevoices.org as well.
HARRY POTTER TRIVIA NIGHT 
Enjoy a night full of Harry Potter-themed trivia on Friday, October 26 in Sabbatini Lounge, 6:30-8:30 p.m.! Students will be split into "houses" and are encouraged to dress up in Harry Potter attire! Come ready to compete and indulge in Harry Potter-themed snacks!

Buc Bulletin

MEN'S SOCCER (4-4-2, 3-1-2 GSC): The Bucs broke a scoreless tie with a 61st-minute goal, which was enough to edge out Mississippi College 1-0 Friday night at Signaigo Field. On Sunday afternoon, the Bucs jumped out to an early lead against Delta State with four first half goals and held that advantage with a 4-1 win. The Bucs are on the road for their next two matchups against Lee on Friday, October 12 and Shorter Sunday, October 14. The Bucs will be back at Signaigo Field Wednesday, October 17 against Rhodes. Full schedule… 
WOMEN'S SOCCER (5-4-1, 4-3-0 GSC): The Lady Bucs fell at the hands of conference rival No. 20 Mississippi College 4-1 at Signaigo Field on Friday night. On Sunday, they dropped a matchup against the Delta State Lady Statesman, 4-3 at Signaigo Field. The Lady Bucs hit the road for two Gulf South Conference games against Lee University and Shorter University. Game one against Lee is Friday, October 12 at 4:00 p.m., followed by the game Sunday against Shorter on Sunday, October 14 at 12:00 p.m. Their next home game is set for Thursday, October 25, when they host Montevallo at 5:00 p.m. Full schedule… 
VOLLEYBALL: (8-13, 2-7 GSC): After losing the first two sets, the Lady Bucs rallied for a win in the third set, but host West Georgia won the fourth set to take the victory Thursday night. On Friday night, host Valdosta State won the last two sets to claim a four-set win over the Lady Bucs after the teams split the first two sets. The Lady Bucs have three home matches this week, starting Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. as they host Trevecca Nazarene. On Friday, they take on Auburn-Montgomery at 6:00 p.m. and then retrun Saturday afternoon to face West Florida at 1:00 p.m. Full schedule…
