WELCOME TO THE MIDWEST

Hello Amazing Taiko People!

Jason here from the kaDON team! This is my first official newsletter so go easy on me, i'm a little nervous :)

I grew up in the Midwest of the United States, Chicago to be exact. I also grew up playing taiko and was fortunate to come from a family of taiko-playing parents. When I was a kid, the internet was just starting to be a thing. It was much harder to connect to people, interest groups and communities online. I always had this feeling that I was on a (landlocked) island, isolated from what I considered to be the North American taiko center of the universe (hint: the West Coast).

So many things have changed since the early internet era. The growth of taiko communities is happening at an amazing rate all across the world. There are hundreds of ways to stay digitally connected with people from every part of your life. And I learned that Chicago is not really an island. However, I do believe that those early years of feeling taiko-isolated contextualizes why I'm so genuinely excited for you to join us at kaDON’s first taiko retreat. For this Midwesterner, bringing taiko people together in the wooded wonderlands of Wisconsin is such a rare opportunity. And holding it so close to the famed Ice Age Trail during peak fall foliage season...what could be better! Imagine if you will...brightly colored falling leaves, crisp autumn air, and soul-warming campfires all wrapped up in a blanket of "KADON ONDO". Time to mentally-prepare for some good, hearty, Midwestern fun!

The planning team has been hard at work, thinking tirelessly about what constitutes a truly "unique" taiko experience. We knew we wanted to be surrounded by nature (340 wooded acres of Wisconsin backcountry to be exact). We prioritized balance between intense instruction and moments of reflection to help people solidify new ideas, new music and new techniques. We focused the artistic instruction around a single composition which Shogo eagerly agreed to create for the retreat. And of course we plan to utilize the FIRE... to keep us warm, to provide us light for an evening Yoko Uchi workshop (literally around the campfire), to turn hershey's+marshmellows+graham crackers into gooey s'mores...AND to create an inviting space for the telling of taiko tales.

Still on the fence? All good. Feel free to visit the retreat’s basic FAQ page or take a peek at our Visual Schedule (just below the big registration button). And attached here is the welcome e-mail we recently sent to the retreat's registered attendees!
