Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
5 October, 2018

This year, as part of the theme “Setting Sail,” the Dalat staff have committed to four action steps to encourage and develop our community and enhance the positive culture and environment on our campus. These steps are in the form of the acronym “Sail”. Last week we looked at the first one S – “stop the complaining.” This week we focus on the “A” which stands for “assume the best”.

Unfortunately, most of us do not assume the best of people. We instead tend to make negative assumptions about people’s behavior. In science this is termed “fundamental attributional error” which means that we tend to assume that other people’s behavior is caused by internal factors while we tend to view or own misbehavior in light of situational influences and circumstances. To put it another way, “the other person is a jerk but I am simply having a tough day.”

The ironic thing is that these negative assumptions we make actually have a direct negative impact on us as well. The negative assumptions about people throughout the day can actually create negative emotions and impact our own perceptions and behavior. Simply put, we discourage ourselves and facilitate negative feelings in ourselves.

Like some other human behaviors, for many of us these negative assumptions are our default. To nullify them and remove their negative impact is not something that will come naturally. It is something we will need to be intentional about and put some effort into. The good news is that it can be learned and then become a habit. So what can you do to turn this around and start assuming the best in others?
  • Instead of immediately labeling someone with negative assumptions, try to put yourself in their shoes and come up with some logical excuses for their behavior. When someone does something that frustrates you, think of reasons why this person might have done this without evil or selfish intent (e.g. when someone cuts you off in the car assume that they are late and if they don’t get to work on time they may get fired and lose their job).
  • Ask clarifying questions. When a person does something that frustrates you or gets on your nerves, ask them a few questions and clarify what happened. Often times this will stop a misunderstanding from taking place or give you a chance to understand the situation in a different light.
  • Simply afford to people what you want them to give to you; the benefit of the doubt. Next time you start making negative assumptions, stop yourself by being motivated that you would want them to do that for you.
  • With email this is incredibly important. A person’s quickly typed up email can mean nothing at all, but because we imprint our negative assumptions on it, all of a sudden the email is offensive in a dramatic fashion. A simple joke can be misconstrued and turn into a broken relationship.
Let’s begin to challenge ourselves to “assume the best” and see how this little (but hard step) might enhance our community in significant ways.

Have a great weekend,

Parents’ Rights and Responsibilities

학부모님들의 권리와 책임
家长的权力及责任

We believe that parents are an integral part of their child’s education, and a successful school experience depends on good two-way communication and a solid partnership with families. We seek to foster time together in community on campus as part of that, from Popcorn Mondays to morning coffee at the Junior Class Store. To foster positive communication and community interactions, we have developed a document entitled “Parents' Rights and Responsibilities: Code of Conduct.” We encourage all parents to read this document and to become familiar with the school’s policies.

HS Drama Production
Murder Mystery

고등학생 드라마 제작 - 살인 추리극
高中年度歌舞剧
Murder, mayhem, and madness fill the stage for nearly two hours of exciting intrigue, plot twists, and a spectrum of quirky-to-conventional characters. The high school drama department presents its fall production, To Kill a Murderer: A Mystery in Three Acts, making its premier debut in Harbor Hall on Wednesday, October 17, at 6:30 p.m. with a special dinner theater option! The second (and final) performance on Thursday, October 18, begins at 7 p.m. (no dinner option). Tickets for both nights are RM10 and are available starting October 1 from the main office or from Mrs. Horton.

The Thursday-only dinner theater option is an add-on opportunity provided by our junior class with set meals starting at RM8; to browse your options or to place an order, click here: https://goo.gl/forms/u2F54K9uQPxR8b4a2.

Payment for all pre-ordered meals must be given to Mrs. Horton by 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16, or the order won't be placed. Prepaid dinners will be delivered to Harbor Hall at 6 p.m. for pre-show enjoyment. Dining patrons will be seated at tables near the stage, while drama-only patrons will enjoy traditional row seating in the tiered levels.

From Kids 4 Kids will sell baked goods before Thursday’s show and at intermission to raise money for local needs beyond our school community. What a delicious way to support this meaningful cause!

Junior Class Servathon

11학년들의 봉사활동
初级班服务马拉松

On September 28, the junior class had the opportunity to serve at the Batu Grace Children’s Home. We are proud of our juniors who all worked very hard — scraping old paint off of walls, painting dorms, repairing a broken fence, painting the home’s logo, sanding and painting shelves, and playing with the children. The most rewarding moment of our day was hearing from Ramesh, Batu Grace’s director. The home is undergoing an inspection next week in order to renew their license. “I was very worried about their visit,” said Ramesh, “But now after your visit, I am actually excited to see them come. You have made a big impact.”

Our senior class also donated to Batu Grace in the form of snacks, food items, new oscillating fans, and other appliances. It was fun to see the joy on the faces of Ramesh and the children as we shared the gifts with them.

The junior class would like to thank everyone who contributed. Mr. Ramesh also sends his sincere thanks and gratitude to all who made this day possible.
