President's Message

Sisters of the Cloth,

Hello, from this rainy beginning of October. It makes me want to hibernate in my sewing studio, which has benefited from a cleaning out and is ready to receive inspiring new swag. Refer to the email blast for details about our garage sale reboot and remember to bring small change and any quilty friends that could use some new to them treasures. We will start with our information portion of the meeting, which I will try to keep as brief as possible then on with the shopping.
With the colder weather and shorter nights, we lose some of our more experienced guild members. Take a moment and look around for any faces that you are used to seeing. If you know that they are absent because of not being able to get a ride to guild, let me or Vicky Meraw at the membership table know.If you would be willing to offer a drive to one of these members, let Vicky know as well. We are trying to match up potential partners from similar areas.
Robin Jeffrey is starting the work to redesign our Patchers website. Part of that process will be getting your permission to use your quilts and likenesses in media. It will be part of the new membership process in the spring but Vicki will be chasing us all to update our current membership. This will be especially important for us as we prepare for our upcoming quilt show. Take a moment and give serious consideration to being part of the show committee. Monica gives some details further in the newsletter. We are a small guild, that produces a premium show (if I do say so myself!).

Outreach

Our next sew days for Outreach are:
Thurs., Oct. 25, Thurs., Nov. 22 and Thurs., Dec. 13.
We meet 10 a.m. til 9 p.m. at the Hope Church. We take a supper break from 4:30 til 6 p.m. You are welcome to join us for Chinese food at Hong Xin (It's in the McDonald's strip mall in Port). We will continue to work on quilts for the hospice. (If anyone who is binding a current hospice quilt needs a label, let Karen Lee or I know.)

Staytreat Sew Day

We have Hope Church booked from 9 -9 on Saturday, Nov. 3. For $25, this is a day for you to sew on your own projects and get a head start on your Christmas to do list. There will be some irons to share and you only need to bring what you need to work on. Your lunch, supper and snacks will be provided. That being said, my brother is unavailable to cook for us. If anyone is willing to take on the food portion of the workload, you will get your sew day for free. Otherwise you will be stuck with my sad cooking! (I don't recommend it!) I will have the sign up sheet at the Oct. meeting. We sold out last time and had to turn away people so sign up quickly.

Port Perry Patchers UFO Challenge 2018-19

If you are an avid quilter, you probably have a stack of unfinished projects hiding somewhere!  Whether you ran out of time, did not have the right materials, or just became frustrated, unfinished quilt projects pile up easily – and can take up a lot of precious space.
Make a promise this year to clean out some of your UFOs by joining our UFO Challenge GroupLet’s work together and get ‘em done!  This is a WIN-WIN guarantee for you personally.  Maybe you only need to bind a quilt.  Perhaps your UFO is a small wallhanging or a Christmas kit that you have purchased years ago and just never got around to starting….
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
  1. Pick up the registration form at the guild meeting in September.
  2. Record 6 projects that you want to finish over the course of this year.  Remember you can choose from any of your UFOs: kits, fabric that has been on your shelf for eons, a set of placemats, wallhangings, tablerunners, baby quilts, lap quilts, bed quilts, purses or bags, embroidery projects, applique, ….the list is endless.
  3. Make yourself a copy of this list.
  4. Bring one copy of this list to the October 2018 Guild Meeting along with $6.00 in cash and register with the UFO Co-ordinator, Lynn Burnett.
  5. At each guild meeting, we will randomly draw a number from 1-6.We will send that number out to the membership via email. This is the number that you are to work on for that month.
  6. At the end of the month, fill in your progress on your personal copy of these projects.Bring your completed UFO to earn tickets for the final draw at the June luncheon.
  7. Incomplete projects do not qualify for the prize draws.  Complete means: quilted, bound (with a label and hanging sleeve, if applicable).
  8. Every UFO completed and signed off on time will earn your 5 tickets for the June draw.Have a stressful month and cannot finish on time?Earn 1 ticket for the draw when you do finish it!
  9. Cost to enter the challenge is $1.00 per item on your list (maximum $6.00).
  10. By the end of the year, you will have 6 finished projects, or you will have at least made a significant dent in your stack of UFOs.
  11. The challenge will run starting in October, first number drawn at that meeting.  There will be no UFO number for December, meaning that whatever number is pulled in November, you will have virtually 2 months to complete that project!  Hope that it is a BIGGIE!  UFO number months are:  October, November, January, February, March and April (April’s UFO must be in for the May Guild meeting).

PORT PERRY PATCHERS' QUILT SHOW 2020 - SAVE THE DATE!

Our next guild show will be held Friday and Saturday, May 8 & 9, 2020 at the Scugog Community Centre Arena.  Every four years we take this opportunity to show off our members’ wonderful quilts, attract new members to the guild and raise funds for our programmes.

Show convenors, Sandy Curl James and Monica Wolfe, need your help in planning and executing the event and hope you will join us at our first show committee meeting at Hope Church,  Monday, November 5th at 7 p.m.

We are looking for members to chair or assist with advertising & promotion, the Cafe, floor plan and rentals, guest services (welcome desk, silent auction etc.), the Guild Boutique, Memory Lane (commemorating our members who are no longer with us), the Merchant Mall (recruiting and co-ordinating spaces for our vendors), quilt display and registration and producing the show book.  A sign-up sheet, along with a more complete list of tasks and job descriptions, will be available at the October guild meeting.

For more information, or if you are unable to attend the October meeting, please email Sandy at curljames2733@gmail.com or Monica at monica.e.wolfe@gmail.com.  We would love to hear your ideas for activities and displays to make this our best show yet.
