Welcome Autumn!
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. - Albert Camus

After writing my post a couple of weeks ago about our oversaturated autumn weather, Mama Nature has busted out a sunny, showy, last hurrah in the Pacific Northwest as a gorgeous prelude to the bare beauty of winter. Whether it's the stunning foliage of a sugar maple or the more reserved beauty of a cyclamen, autumnal delights abound.

The fall time - aside from being so aptly named as trees and shrubs fling their leaves to the earth - offers us the gifts of inspiration, beauty and faith. The first article in this newsletter dives into these gifts of the season as articulated in Traditional Chinese Medicine (and echoed by other cultures).

In celebration of a particularly abundant year, the second article offers a recipe for the ultimate slow food that begins with hunting acorns (or just raking them up by the bushel). Give them a try and see what all the squirrel fuss is about.

The final article is a reflection on letting go, another tenet of Autumn as evidenced by nature. Letting go could be as simple as accepting that summer (or Late Summer) is over, regardless of the weather. Or letting go could be on a deeper level. Is there a burden you have been carrying too long? A story about being wronged that you've been replaying in your head? Letting go and forgiveness are intimately connected. If you're having trouble forgiving someone or something (especially yourself), embrace another gift of this season - letting go - and release what no longer serves you.

May all the gifts of autumn be yours -
Kim
The Gifts of Autumn

And just like that...it's autumn! In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this last season in the Five Phases cycle is about inspiration and faith. Time to take some deep breaths, acknowledge the beauty around you, and remember you are connected to a larger whole. Click here to help find inspiration as we welcome autumn. A-corny Post
Looking for a nutritious, delicious snack to welcome autumn? (Hint: it's not "pumpkin-spice" latte.) A staple of squirrels and indigenous peoples alike, acorns are high in protein and make an excellent gluten-free flour substitute. Easy to identify and fun to gather, acorns are free for the taking! Enjoy this year's harvest with homemade acorn muffins.
Letting Go
While gathering resources for winter makes sense, creating a stockpile of grudges and grievances doesn't have the same rate of return. If you tend to suffer the slings and arrows of the world long after they have been hurled, finding a way to forgive yourself first can help you let go and move on. Learning the true meaning of forgiveness is a good first step.

Cooler weather invites us to get cozy. Try this healthy chai recipe after raking leaves or going for a hike or drive to revel in the beautiful fall foliage. Look for herbs like green cardamom pods at a natural foods store, in the bulk section of your grocery store, or order online at Mountain Rose Herbs or Starwest Botanicals.
