"Celebrating festivals can bring us consciously to what we all experience instinctively in our daily lives, the changing cycles of the seasons and of life itself. Through various festivals and rituals, we acknowledge and celebrate our connection to and our responsibility toward each other and the world."
~ Marilyn Pelrme
Festivals
In autumn comes Saint Michael with sword and with shield
Passes over meadow and orchard and field.
He’s on the path to battle ‘gainst darkness and strife –
He is the heavenly warrior protector of life.

NEW FACULTY FEATURE

Karim Sohrevardi - High School Math & Science
Hello, Waldorf School community,

I am excited to be joining my colleagues and students at the school.

After working in various engineering projects in international sites, I decided to immigrate to Canada and have called North Vancouver home for the past 20 years. In Canada, I pursued my passion for teaching and am thrilled to be teaching Math and Physics at Waldorf. Among other things, I enjoy traveling and learning about the nuances of different cultures.

My teaching philosophy is based on developing in students a capacity for critical thought, a tolerance of difference and the ability to acquire knowledge. Besides enjoying the beautiful outdoors in British Columbia, I can also be found spending time with my two adult sons.

Regards,
Karim Sohrevardi

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lice - Please check your child for lice and nits as there has been a reported case in the Grade School (the families in that class have been notified). We appreciate you letting us know if any lice or nits have been found so we can continue the checking process. Find linked the Lice Policy and Protocol for your convenience.
Library - Our wonderful librarian, Christiane Rolland, is pleased to be back in the school library with all the students and staff. "I wish to thank all of you who have donated books new and used over the summer and into the autumn. The great news is that Our First Nation's titles collection is expanding. As always any book suggestions you may have for our parent or student collections are always welcome. Please feel free to drop by the library, I am here Tuesday to Friday from 12:15 to 3:15 or else email me at library@vws.ca. Happy fall to all!"

VWS INDIGENOUS COUNCIL

Indigenous families, and the parents and guardians of Indigenous students, including former students, alumni and members of the wider VWS community, are warmly invited to an informal weekend gathering in October to meet, connect, and discuss the formation of an Indigenous Council at the Vancouver Waldorf School. This gathering is the first of its’ kind at the VWS and is specifically for Indigenous families, including non-Indigenous parents and guardians of Indigenous children. read more

VWS isn't only fun for the children, adults like to get involved too - from ringing the morning bell, to painting in the schoolyard, and serving up delicious Indian food to wrap up an Ancient Civilizations block!

SERVICE TRIP FUNDRAISING

Get your flower bulb orders in by Wednesday, October 10. This is your last chance to help Grade 9 as they work hard to raise funds to donate to the Grads. Help them out with an order; stop in to see Sarah at the High School or Laura at the Grade School. read more
Grade 12 Students will be at the Grade School on Tuesday afternoons at pick-up with baked goods and treats on offer. You'll find them weekly, so be sure to bring your loonies and toonies!

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

Grocery Card Program - There is an enormous potential for our school with the Grocery Card Program. The program consists of buying monthly cards directly from the school (by cheque, credit card, or added on to your tuition) and using these pre-paid cards at your local supermarket instead of swiping your debit or credit card! You spend exactly the same amount and the school gets a percentage of the sales!
Currently, 20% of our parents participate. The goal for this school year is to double that! That means that we need only 5 more donors per class. Imagine if we had 100% participation!!! Check it out here Grocery Card Program
Christmas Fair Planning Committee - Our first planning meeting is coming up on October 11; are you up for guaranteed fun, zero stress and celebrating our community? Contact Mary by stopping by her office or by emailing mhenley@vws.ca if you want to get involved. read more
Gardening Committee - Are you keen to get involved in helping to beautify and maintain the gardens at the Grade School and Early Childhood Centre? The Gardening Committee is welcoming new members to join in light planting, pruning, and planning for spring. Contact Anne Pepper at anne@annepepper.com or 604-709-8155 if you are interested in helping out. Join the first gathering on Friday, October 5 at 1:00 pm.
Playground Committee - Have you noticed the playful buzz in the big play yard after school? The Playground Committee is re-convening to dream up new updates for our children, and are looking for new members to bring ideas. If you have a vision, or perhaps are better with tools, or you simply want to be part of a fun group to spearhead the next phase of playground improvements, contact Bonnie Gosse at bonnie3@ogopogo.com to get involved.
Grade 12 students got creative using whatever materials they could come up with to build a biochemical molecule found in the human body for Biology 12. We had some delicious and beautiful triglycerides, DNA and proteins!

More Michaelmas photos from last Friday! Thank you, Ute for sharing.
"Love is higher than opinion. If people love one another, the most varied opinions can be reconciled… This is one of the most important tasks for humankind today and in the future: that human beings should learn to live together and understand one another. If this human fellowship is not achieved, all talk of inner development is empty."
