2018 Theme: With Her: A Skilled GirlForce

Today's generation of girls are preparing to enter a world of work that is being transformed by innovation and automation. Educated and skilled workers are in great demand, but roughly a quarter of young people – most of them female – are currently neither employed or in education or training.

On 11 October, International Day of the Girl, we are working alongside all girls to expand existing learning opportunities, chart new pathways and calling on the global community to rethink how to prepare them for a successful transition into the world of work.

Girls Invent believes strongly in developing our girls to be strong and independent free thinkers who have the self belief to achieve their dreams. On International Day of the Girl 2018, we would like to celebrate some of our amazing girls who have worked hard to achieve their dreams.

Nigerian Girls Escape Trafficking and Start Inventing

Girls Invent has recently begun supporting Nigerian girls who were profiled by SBS Dateline TV.

Joy from PIAM has this to say about the collaboration between Girls Invent and PIAM: "The main mission of PIAM is to support victims of trafficking, especially the ones exploited in prostitution. The 9 girls participating in the “Girl’s Invent” project are victims of trafficking who have decide to free themselves from the prostitution racket and start an integration project.

They come from different parts of Nigeria and they are aged 17 to 25 years. Most of them have been in Italy at least one year, but their real integration has been strongly compromised by the exploitative situation in which they were inserted.

Now, through the PIAM welcome project and the routes in which they are inserted, they have the chance to build a autonomous future untied from their past experiences. They have different levels of schooling but none of them got to high levels of education due to the economical situation they grew up in, but through the “Girl’s Invent” project and through the support of PIAM’s staff, they are getting to understand how they can actually “build” an idea despite their low schooling or the situations from which they have been conditioned. This is a good opportunity of empowerment and self-trust building which will, hopefully, lead them to a greater understanding of their skills and competences."

SPOTLIGHT ON….
GEORGIA
Girls Invent Trainer

What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Since I’m more of a night owl than an early bird, I’m going to take this question literally…my alarm(s). My alarm is ‘A Long Way to the Top (If you Wanna Rock ‘n Roll)’, so it’s hard to sleep through that!
What attracted you to join the team at Girls Invent?
Girls Invent gave me the opportunity to utilise skills I learnt during my business degree and also indulge my passion to teach. I like meeting other young people and sharing my experiences with them. I want to tell students to never give up and to keep fighting for their dreams, believing in someone-even if they have given up on themselves is paramount to me.

What is your biggest achievement to date- personal or professional?
Being the first person in my family to attend and graduate from university.

If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?
For a personal mentor or a ‘life coach’, I’d choose Bruce Lee because he was an innovator and a deep thinker. He’d also be a great workout partner!

For a professional mentor, I’d choose my grade 5 teacher Mr Pearce. His approach to lesson planning and his ability to bring together life skills, civics and citizenship and the curriculum challenged me and inspired me to become a lifelong-learner. He is one of my key influences who has inspired me to re-apply to university in 2019 and become a teacher.

What do you like most about your work with Girls Invent?
Opportunity to visit new places, meet people I wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to be in contact with and encouraging girls to be passionate!

What three words would you use to describe your role?
Educator. Motivator. Communicator.

When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?
A couple of weeks ago… hanging with a friend on Friday night, watching YouTube videos and eating pizza.
