This Weekend

Pastor's Sunday School

In Pastor’s Sunday School we  study the lectionary texts which follow the church calendar. For Sunday, October 7:
• Job 1:1; 2:1-10
• Psalm 26
• Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12
• Mark 10:2-16
It’s an informal study, always open to all, at 8:30 AM in the New Room

St. Mark’s 5th Annual Blessing of the Animals Sunday, October 7

The simultaneous ringing of bells will draw us to the procession into the sanctuary this coming Sunday for the fifth annual St. Mark's Blessing of the Animals. Everyone is welcome to partake of the festivities. As your pet is blessed in one of two courtyard blessing stations, keepers will be given a St. Francis prayer card and pet medal as reminder of the love of God through His gift of animals. Meow! Tweet! Squeak! Ruff! Moo! Quack! Rib-it! Baaa! Oink! (Humans making animal noises is called onomatopoeia. Hee haw!)

For our further enjoyment are ambassador dogs and reps from San Diego Humane Society; Dr. Bjorn Barre of Kearny Mesa Vet center answering your pet's health questions; the DiProfio youth carrying wee ones for adoption; and little creatures from Chihuahua Rescue over which we ooh and ahh. And if this isn't enough, come to enjoy the antics of professional dog trainer, Chris Mooredock of American Canine Training. There will be goodies for humans and animals.

World Communion Sunday October 7

This special offering is a request of the general church (the United Methodist Churches in the United States). This is a Sunday where we celebrate our inclusivity and diversity. Funds collected for this special Sunday provide scholarships for racial- and ethnic-minority undergraduate and graduate students and in-service non-degree training, both nationally and internationally. Your generous gift will make education and vocational impact possible for more students. Will you help equip gifted and qualified students from around the globe to become the world-changers God created and is guiding them to be?

Open Mosque Day at the Islamic Center of San Diego

Our Muslim neighbors are offering an Open Mosque Day this Sunday, October 7 from 2:30- 5:00pm. There will be guided tours, open discussions, presentations, refreshments and more. Get to know your neighbors! The Islamic Center of San Diego is at 7050 Eckstrom Ave., San Diego, CA 92111.

Art Show News

Congratulations to JoAnna Potthoff, Diana DiProfio, and Ells DiProfio. All of them are members of the St. Mark's family who have photos in the current art show. Please congratulate them when you see them. You may bring you friends and neighbors to see the show 1-5pm every Saturday in October (6, 13, 20 and 27). To see the show outside these hours, call the church office (858-273-1480) or contact show coordinator Judy Edelblute at 858-278-0255 or judyedel8@gmail.com. Judy also needs hosts for the show. Each host works one shift 1-3pm or 3-5pm on one Saturday. Let her know when you can help.

Help for Puerto Rico

Rejoice! The offering to help meet human needs and for rebuilding efforts in Puerto Rico totaled $2,250.00! The total amount will be sent to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Thank you for the generosity of those who prepared and served the wonderful luncheon on Sept. 16 without cost to us. What a gift they gave us, and what a gift we are sending to those who suffered greatly after a hurricane devastated the island. If you were unable to participate in the offering, you can still do so. Mark your offering for Puerto Rico relief and mail it to the church office or put it in the offering plate any Sunday.
