The Manitoba Cooperative Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Co-op Awards Program.  Join us in celebrating these worthy recipients at our Co-op Awards Banquet held on Wednesday, October 17th during National Co-op Week in Winnipeg.

  • Dale Ward of Winnipeg, nominated by Credit Union Central of Manitoba, will be awarded the Distinguished Cooperator Award.  Dale spent his career working with Manitoba Credit Unions and helping shape the credit union system in to the strong and resilient system that it is today.  Additionally, Dale spent time on the Board of the Manitoba Cooperative Association and sat on many national and international committees for the co-op and credit union system.  Currently, Dale continues as a Board member of the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba.

Co-op Week 2018

Co-op Week 2018 - from October 14 to 20 - will celebrate how cooperatives are one of the best ways that Canadians solve challenges together.

Co-op week is a celebration of Canadian cooperative and credit union members. Co-op Week is always celebrated during the same week as International Credit Union Day, which is the third Thursday in October of each year.

In addition to web banners and social media images, Cooperatives and Mutuals of Canada (CMC) provides poster art for participants to decorate their offices and Co-op Week events. Download one or all of the 6 poster designs and show your love for co-ops!

The Gathering

Ten years ago, the Gathering theme focused on the inspiring way in which people came together to shape their world and tackle threats to people, the planet, and our economies in the wake of the great recession. Once again, we find ourselves and our communities on shifting ground. A host of issues like the urgency of climate change, resources and people that are stretched too thin, tensions between governments and communities, discrimination, global migration and poverty have created a sense of unease and uncertainty. As the sustainability of our work, movements, and leadership become increasingly challenging, we are finding that we may not be as resilient as we thought.

But once again, in the face of adversity, we see powerful and transformative actions happening and people coming together to fight for a better world. From the global #metoo and March For Our Lives actions, to local movements seeking justice in an age of reconciliation, pushing for community to be placed at the centre of decision making, and creating innovative solutions with diverse people and ideas, civil society is responding and demanding that our voices and priorities be heard. We are on the edge of change, and finding our way through the uncertainty will take innovation and audacity. But with the determination, passion and commitment we see around us, we believe that change will translate into stronger, sustainable, inclusive, and equitable communities.

The Gathering is an annual pay-what-you-can event where Manitoba’s community builders connect, learn, and celebrate success. It is open to all from staff of community organizations and cooperatives, to civil servants, funders, students, academics, or anyone interested in community development and community economic development.

Be sure to register and join us on October 19th in Winnipeg for the Gathering.

CWCF National Conference

The Canadian Worker Co-op Federation (CWCF), along with CoopZone, presents its annual conference Nov. 1 - 3 in Winnipeg. This year's theme is "Co-operation in the Changing World of Work" which will explore how changes such as increasing income inequality, automation, and climate change could provide opportunities for the worker co-op movement. While the conference theme varies year to year, this year will also feature mainstays, including engaging workshops and forums, full-day intensives on financial management and co-op development, networking breaks, and some fun opportunities for socialization. Visit http://canadianworker.coop/2018-conference/ for the complete program and registration details or register here.

If you are not able to join us for the whole conference, please be sure to join us on the evening of Thursday, November 1st for a free public keynote address.  Click here for more information and to register.

Call to Action: M-100

Following the unanimous adoption of Motion M-100 in support of cooperatives on April 5, 2017, the federal government is now consulting cooperatives on four pillars of implementation:
  • Accessing Federal Programs and Services
  • Raising Awareness of the Co-op Model
  • Modernizing Co-op Sector Data
  • Seeking opportunities: Indigenous economic development, women and youth entrepreneurship, renewable energy, and community-based innovation
Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC) is encouraging its members and their members to respond to the questionnaire which, together with the input from other federal departments and provincial government, will serve to produce a report summarizing engagement process, outlining specific initiatives and launching next steps.

The deadline to respond to the questionnaire is October 31, 2018.  If you wish more info or a copy of the questionnaire, please contact Madeleine Brilliant of CMC.

CoopZone Developer Training

Registrations are now open for CoopZone's Introductory and Advanced Levels of Cooperative Development training in October!

Bursaries are available to qualified applicants.  This program is delivered online. Anyone working as a consultant to co-ops, or if you work for a credit union or any other co-op, a social enterprise incubator, business incubator, a business consulting firm, or just want to know about co-ops and the cooperative movement, this training is for you.

"I've taken the advanced level courses, and I highly recommend this training. Very practical and informative and getting to work with other developers across the country all greatly improved my ability to work as a co-op developer."  Billy Granger, Co-op Developer in Winnipeg

Why take the training? While they have much in common with other business structures, co-ops have a unique historical and social context, specific regulations that legislate certain elements of their business, a democratic governance model, and are uniquely able to overcome a wide range of business and social challenges through the power of collaboration.  Fitting that all together requires a specific skill set and knowledge base.   Register today to empower yourself with the knowledge and skills to effectively develop co-ops!
