Welcome to the weekly Newsletter for parents and carers of students attending John Hanson Community School.

Inspire - Care - Succeed

‘HEAD’ Lines

Positive lines of communication

Dear parents/carers

One sentence I think I always use in any conversation I have with parents is that any conversation we have and/or feedback we get as a school (good, indifferent or bad) is actually worthwhile, as it allows us to continue improving our educational offer to your children.

What does concern me however, is on a small number of occasions, parents have arrived at school with the expectation that it is OK to verbally abuse members of staff when they are unhappy about an aspect of school life that their child is experiencing.

Thankfully this is extremely rare, but at the same time it should not happen in any  work place and will not be accepted at John Hanson.

With this in mind can I please remind parents that if they wish to speak with a member of staff about any aspect of their child’s school life (other than an urgent child protection issue which we will deal with immediately) you should contact the school and book an appointment, making it clear what you wish to discuss and with whom. In this way the relevant member of staff can arrange the meeting and prepare an appropriate response.

If you are attending an ‘open event’ such as parents evening or tutor evening, this is not an appropriate forum to discuss issues that are likely to take more than the time you may have been allocated on one of these evenings.

Thank you in advance for your continued support, and the many of you who regularly communicate with the school in order that we can work together in the best interests of your child’s educational progress and achievement.

Enjoy the weekend with your children

Regards

Cyber Safety -  Week 3 - Online Identity

Nowadays we all have some form of digital footprint. In our personal lives we would never leave our front doors unlocked, or advertise personal information, however, many of us are doing this online by not protecting our online identity.

The below video just shows how much personal information can be obtained by the right people.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrjT8m0hcKU&feature=youtu.be&safe=active

Please see the below tips on how to protect our personal identity:
  1. Don’t play social media games-  These are notorious for asking questions that provide hackers with the security information they need e.g What was your first pets name? etc.
  2. Don’t take dodgy online quizzes
  3. Don’t accept friend requests from strangers
  4. Delete old posts. Remove personal information from social media
  5. Use passwords on everything and not the same password
  6. Do not use public Wi-Fi to check bank accounts or social media accounts
  7. Turn on the two-factor Authentication option

OCTOBER IS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH

and to celebrate, we are holding various events in the LRC:

This week, we have asked our librarians and regular users to comment on what makes our Library great!!

Then, one of our librarians, Daniel, has devised this poster which is now on display on our school noticeboards. Now, the whole school community can see what a wonderful Library we have here at John Hanson.

JUST ARRIVED IN THE LRC

Some lovely new titles including books with lots of important and current themes that students will relate to.

In our new collection, there are books by BAME (Black, Asian and ethnic minority) authors which feature characters from a huge variety of diverse backgrounds.   To ensure that ethnic representation in books reflects the reality of our world.

Last summer, the whole school got involved in The Big Write!

A writing competition based on the theme of ‘Community’; the winning entries can now be
read on the school website.

NATIONAL POETRY DAY – OCTOBER 2018

We celebrated National Poetry Day this week.

To enter our National Poetry Day Competition, you must write a short poem on the subject of CHANGE.  Any change in your life is fine or any other idea you may have on the subject of CHANGE.  Entries need to be handed in to the LRC by Thursday, 11th October.  Winners can choose a new title as a prize and entries will be displayed in the LRC.
