Andrews Completes Record Breaking Flight

MONROE, La. - Louisiana Tech student and Monroe native, Mason Andrews has returned home after completing his mission to fly around the world. NBC 10 News talked to Andrews and his family when he landed safely on the ground at the Monroe Regional Airport.

It was a 75-day mission accomplished with a hero's welcome as Mason Andrews became the youngest pilot to fly around the world.

photo18-year-old Andrews cherished the moment, "That was awesome I've been waiting for that for a long time now," he shared with NBC 10.

His parents were also basking in their sons homecoming, "Two words to describe that joy and relief," said Andrew's father Jeb.

His mother Nancy, said she couldn't contain herself, "He was trying to let go and I said uh uh don't let go because I wasn't done hugging yet."

photoThe home crowd cheered him on," The community was so supportive, the messages from people in the community, people we didn't even know," said J. Andrews.

However, the journey came with many obstacles, starting with the weather said M. Andrews. His parents shared that it was frightening.

"He took off literally in the face of a typhoon which we would call a hurricane here and it was a big one. That was a pretty hairy scary moment for us," said his father.

photoIt was with prayer and planning that got mason home safe indicated his mother, "It's been amazing, I can't imagine we would've had the kind of support anywhere, that we've had right here in Monroe."

Mason's mission is to bring awareness and support to MedCamps Louisiana, and it touched the hearts of many.

"He didn't have to bring us along with him and he did and because of him we've raised $30,000 for MedCamps in his honor," said MedCamps Executive Director Caleb Seney.

Through it all, his parents shared that they're just happy he's home safe. "I told him from the start I didn't care anything about the record me and his mom were not for the record," said his father

photo"I'm so proud of him but I was proud before I'm just so glad he's home," his mother said.

For Mason,  it's back campus life at Louisiana Tech and even though he's been all over the globe he's been keeping up, "I've been taking online classes," he said.

It appears that support will be the least of his worries on his next journey.

"He's in a position to pick up national sponsorships now because he's made a name for himself," J. Andrews said.

photoFor Mason even the sky won't be the limit. He told NBC 10 that he will likely take on his next mission in 2019 after he gets some much needed sleep!

He also received a $10,000 scholarship from Louisiana Tech to help him take his goals to even higher heights.

See ALL of the Louisiana Aviation News

Occasionally someone asks me to include something in the Louisiana Aviation News and I do.  Then I got a note from them later asking me if I got the message because they didn’t see it in there.  I was puzzled because I knew it was there.

Then I realized what the problem was.

If you have a Gmail address and read it on certain kinds of devices, they only show you the beginning of the message and then cut off the end at some point. For example, if you read the last edition of the news on the Gmail App on an iPhone, the end of the email would have looked like this picture.

What you need to do to see the rest of the news email is to click on the blue writing that says VIEW ENTIRE MESSAGE.  Then the rest of the news email will appear…. which is this case is almost half of it including all of the Events for the Current Week, Coming Events, plus more.  Hope this helps.

October Weekend Events

As I’ve pointed out, we have an abundance of flying activities in October.  I welcome everyone to share a few photos and a brief report on any activity that you might happen to attend so that we can all see what we might have missed.  There is no way any of us can make them all.

This weekend we have even more activities with the Southern Heritage Air Shows in Tallulah and the big WWII Air, Sea & Land Festival in New Orleans.  There is a Safety Seminar in Lake Charles, an Aviation Day for Girls in Ruston, and lunch in Gonzales. Last but not least is the big Fall Fly-in, Camp Out & Splash-in in Pineville.  With its location right in the center of the state and the beautiful setting on Lake Buhlow it’s typically Louisiana’s largest fly-in. I’m hoping to see some photos and reports from them all.

Here are some photos that I pulled off of Facebook from the first weekend.  Looks like both events were successful.
