NEW FACULTY FEATURE

Trish Dayal - Education Support Teacher
I’m delighted to join the wonderful VWS Faculty this year in the new role of Educational Support Teacher for Grades 6-12.

I was born into a farming family in Alberta, and moved fresh-faced to Vancouver where I’ve lived for 28 years. I completed degrees at UBC in English Literature and Education and enjoyed teaching as a “Sub” across both Vancouver and North Vancouver School Districts.

I read about Waldorf Education while at University and have gratefully experienced it up close. We came to VWS when my son started Mulberry Bush Preschool, and ten years later he is in Grade 8, my daughter is in Grade 4, and the adventure continues.

I’ve pitched in on various roles here at VWS over the years: from Parent Council, Christmas Fair Coordinating Committee and Class Representative, to rolling up my sleeves for landscaping, fundraising, baking, installing swings, moving sand, painting and more, like all Waldorf parents. I also deeply enjoyed a position working alongside our hard-working administrative team in our Development Department position now lovingly held by Laura. I’ve made many lifelong friends along the way.

Now, as my daughter journeys through the Nine Year Change, I see she’s bringing me with her: out of the dreamy, woollen childhood years and into the academic realm once again. And I’m very happy to be here.

In my non-school life, I’m a chauffeuring, bridge-driving soccer and hockey mom, a writer, gardener, documentary enthusiast and ocean-lover. Have a wonderful year and I hope you involve yourself in all that the VWS community has to offer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill - Next Thursday, October 18 at 10:18 am, our school will participate in the Great British Columbia ShakeOut. We will test our expertise in a province-wide earthquake drill! One of the systems we check is the student release procedure: do we have additional contacts and phone numbers for each student? Please make sure your contact information is correct on BigSis! Thank you. In the meantime, DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!
Student Photos - Photo retakes for GS & HS students will be on the morning of October 19. Please notify Ronaye or Sarah if your child/student requires an individual retake. Weather permitting, we will also have the Grade School panorama that day.
Ukulele Lunch Club - Grade School students are gathering on Wednesdays at lunchtime to strum in the sunshine (or in the Music Room) with Ronaye Ireland and Bonnie Gosse. Bring your ukulele to join in!
School Bus Service - The schedule has reverted to its previous schedule from the 2017-18 school year. This means there will be no afternoon service from the High School. Students who have a Practical Arts class at the Grade School on Monday or Wednesday are welcome to take the bus on those days.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

Grocery Card Program - There is an enormous potential for our school with the Grocery Card Program. The program consists of buying monthly cards directly from the school (by cheque, credit card, or added on to your tuition) and using these pre-paid cards at your local supermarket instead of swiping your debit or credit card! You spend exactly the same amount and the school gets a percentage of the sales!
Currently, 20% of our parents participate. The goal for this school year is to double that! That means that we need only 5 more donors per class. Imagine if we had 100% participation!!! Easy ordering here Grocery Card Program
Christmas Fair Planning Committee - Now meeting weekly, are you up for guaranteed fun, zero stress and celebrating our community? Contact Mary by stopping by her office or by emailing mhenley@vws.ca if you want to get involved. read more
Gardening Committee - Are you keen to get involved in helping to beautify and maintain the gardens at the Grade School and Early Childhood Centre? The Gardening Committee is welcoming new members to join in light planting, pruning, and planning for spring. Contact Anne Pepper at anne@annepepper.com or 604-709-8155 if you are interested in helping out.
Playground Committee - Have you noticed the playful buzz in the big play yard after school? The Playground Committee is re-convening to dream up new updates for our children, and are looking for new members to bring ideas. If you have a vision, or perhaps are better with tools, or you simply want to be part of a fun group to spearhead the next phase of playground improvements, contact Bonnie Gosse at bonnie3@ogopogo.com to get involved.

The Less-is-More Rules of “Simplicity Parenting” - As parents, we are tasked with both providing direction and finding a centre for our family. But, when today’s children are living amidst a barrage of mental, physical, and digital clutter, how are we to navigate a world of too much stuff and too many choices? To sort out how the power of less results in calmer, happier children, we turned to internationally renowned family consultant and Simplicity Parenting author Kim John Payne. read more

Why Waldorf Students Knit - A child who is knitting a hat or a toy kitten sees their will transformed into art. They see their focused, detailed work turn into something beautiful and purpose-filled. They experience how the conceptual becomes concrete. But knitting also teaches more than abstract concept mastery. It also teaches simple and complex mathematics; hand, eye and brain coordination; sensory integration; and resiliency of habit… all while promoting peace of mind. read more

"Love is higher than opinion. If people love one another, the most varied opinions can be reconciled… This is one of the most important tasks for humankind today and in the future: that human beings should learn to live together and understand one another. If this human fellowship is not achieved, all talk of inner development is empty."
