Rick Caughman, originally from upstate New York, lives and works in Ontario, California. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with a degree in advertising illustration, which trained him to work in the communication arts. He began his teaching career at Chaffey College, the La Sierra campus of Loma Linda University, and the University of California at Riverside on a wide range of fine and commercial art topics. With his experience in fine and commercial arts he sees an importance in promoting “marketable thinking” for artists.

While teaching, Rick completed illustration work for local book and magazine publishers, such as Today’s Parent Magazine. Rick designed and created commercial art for clients including Los Angeles World Airports, Apple Computer, Omnitrans, Celestial Seasonings, World Conservation Union, and Scripps College. For a time he and his brother also ran their own advertising agency. His public art commissions include installations in the Greater Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Ontario International Airport. The airport was his first and longest standing client, which included producing their first color poster.

Caughman’s fine art emphasizes the human experience in narrative, abstract or metaphoric form. He creates using a broad spectrum of media including acrylic, charcoal, gouache, ink, crayon, etching and printmaking. Examples of his diverse approaches are his series of iPad Mini photographs converted to aquatint etchings from Solarplates and drypoint etchings printed on an offset lithography press.

THANK YOU
Saturday, September 15, 2018 was an incredible day with The Arts Area at the Ontario Festival of the Arts. We want to thank everyone who made it possible. Thank you to the wonderful artists Andrea Benitez, Tom Cypert, Jimmy Purcell, Bob Hurton (Uncle Bacon), our hardworking Board of Directors, staff and volunteers who participated in The Arts Area booths. Thank you to the Chaffey College Music and Dance Department faculty David Rentz, Pat Aranda, and Michele Jenkins who brought their talented students from the choir, jazz band, and dance program to perform on the festival main stage. Thank you to the City of Ontario, Ontario Museum of History & Art, Chaffey Community Museum of Art, and fellow festival planning committee members for creating such a successful and special event. Thank you to everyone who attended The Arts Area post-festival Third Saturday evening events. Thank you to artist Jaime Muñoz for his stunning artwork on exhibition at CASA Pitzer. And another thank you to Uncle Bacon for his unending enthusiasm to produce a block print created by 165 artists throughout the day at the festival then printed at the evening event, which was a beautiful summation and conclusion to the day. Many, many thanks to all of you who do so much to support the arts in the Inland Empire.
If you missed the opening reception last month, experience it on October 20th!
"My art practice consists of drawing, photography, sculpture, and painting. In my recent work, I have been interested in building the illusion of dimensionality through the utilization of decoration and iconography. The Iconography that I include in my work comes from working- class popular culture and postcolonial focuses within religion and Mesoamerican cultures. My work also attempts to investigate aspects of my Chicano identity as well as existential concepts relating to commodity labor. The ritualistic process of my work is very tactile and involves many laborious hours of tape masking, plotting, and cutting. My work is also accomplished by the utilization of layering processes; each layer previously put down informs the next layer. This mode of working evokes an intuitive process that is somewhat Improvisational."
