From the Nurse

Thank you to all of you for the warm welcome to Trumansburg Middle School, I am so happy to be here. I am thoroughly enjoying meeting all of your kids and learning everything that I need to know about each and every one of them and the staff as well.  If your child has a physical, receives immunizations, or has an injury and sees his doctor, please have the information faxed to my office for our records. It helps make our job much easier.

It has been a whirlwind month in the health office and one of the things that we have been busy doing is making staff and students aware of allergies and serious medical conditions that may be present in the building. With that being said we are reminding staff, students and families that we are a “fragrance free zone.”

What does a fragrance free zone actually mean? A fragrance free zone means that we have staff and students that are especially sensitive to strong scents and odors from perfumes, body sprays, air fresheners, essential oils and other strong fragrances. These strong scents may trigger life threatening asthma attacks or airway difficulties, which we want to avoid at all costs.

A fragrance free zone does not mean that students or staff cannot wear deodorant, use fabric softener, or other such things. We do ask that staff and students do not use cologne, perfume, body sprays, etc prior to coming into the school. These products cling to your clothes, skin and contain products that trigger our students and staff.

We truly appreciate your help in keeping our students and staff safe.  I look forward to a busy but fantastic year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns or to answer any questions. Please feel to stop in to say hi, if you are in the building, it is always nice to put a face with a name as well.

Grade-level News

Fifth Grade

In fifth grade we have been working on our unit on the solar system.  We have learned a bit about shadows and about sunrise and sunset. We also have named our Reeve’s turtle Tater Tot.

Sixth Grade

On October 11th and 12th, sixth graders will be going to Cayuga Nature Center. Mr. Taves/Mrs. Kaplan and Mrs Parker's homeroom will be going on Thursday. Mrs. DeSantis and Mrs. Marshall will be going on October 12th.

Seventh Grade

As a kickoff to our upcoming Let's Do Lunch Project-Based Learning experience, we went on a field trip this week! We split into 5 groups for trips to different local farms. The kids learned about our local produce and had the opportunity to help harvest. Later in the week the kids participated in a Farmer’s Market in the library during their Library Media Literacy class.  Each student was able to select some produce from our harvest to take home. If you cook something delicious with the produce you received, have your student take photos and share them with Ms. Brisson. We will feature them on the library Instagram & Twitter feeds!

View our video from Indian Creek farm and slideshow with pictures from all the farms.

The Let's Do Lunch PBL will continue with a visit from School Lunch Director Rose Hanson, after which students will work to help make the school lunch program more appealing and to promote healthy eating.

In Math we had iReady testing two days this week. For Thursday and Friday we had our regular classroom instruction where we all got used to being in the learning mode again. Read our plans for next week. We have home practice two days each week in math. Parents, I encourage you to check your child’s planner and/or Homework Hotline to know when to expect this. If your kids set good patterns for home practice now it will help them so much in high school.
