This newsletter is the official student communication for the School of Cinema and Media Arts. All students are required to be familiar with the content. It is recommended you archive these newsletters for future reference.

Sundance Film Festival Applications Due October 26

Application and deposits of $1,500 are due by October 26, and the balance is due by December 15th.  This class is open to ALL CMA students on a first come, first served basis, so start having conversations with your parents and peers.  Applications are available in the CMA office or click here

The cost is $3,454 and includes 2 units of class credit, airfare, lodging, ground transportation, a Sundance badge and movie tickets. 

Spring 2019 Biola Film Script Submissions Due November 1

Biola Film supports your short film with a  budget, equipment priority, faculty mentorship, a solid crew, and a memorable weekend of production fun.  Biola Films are submitted to the Student Academy Awards, the DGA Awards, the College Television Awards, and many other significant film festivals.

Directing reels and script submissions are due November 1 at 5 pm.  Scripts must be 12 pages or less. Only upperclassmen who have completed the prereqs for the CNMA 358 Preproduction class can submit directing reels. No late submissions. Email scripts, links to reels, and any questions to Dean Yamada at dean.yamada@biola.edu. 

Finalists are announced November 8th. Pitches on November 15. Winner announced November 20.

Course Registration for Spring 2019

Enrollment in courses for Spring 2019 begins November 6. To start your enrollment follow the steps below. Note that this year registration PINs are obtained through your academic advisor and NOT CMA office staff. 
  1. Academic advising for Spring 2019 begins October 15. Please review Biola's registration overview.
  2. Make an appointment with your faculty academic advisor before November 6 to select courses for Spring. Your advisor is listed in your Degree Audit found in MyAccount. If a CMA faculty member is not listed email Sena Shin
  3. OR make an appointment with the CMA Peer Academic Advisor Sierra Stoltzfus.
  4. Review your Degree Audit for needed courses (search for class schedule on My Account) ahead of time before meeting with advisor.
  5. Meet with your Advisor and obtain your registration PIN. PINs will NOT be available from staff at the CMA Office.
  6. Note your course registration time window in MyAccount.

Coke-Cola/Regal Films Contest Selection Process

Thank you to all the CMA students who submitted scripts.
Top 30 scripts announced October 17.
Top 15 semi-finalist scripts announced October 20. Coke will reach out to faculty sponsor and the filmmakers. Questions about the student, their scripts, or their production are addressed at this time.
Semi-finalists have until October 25 at 5 pm EST to get responses to anything addressed earlier.
Top 5 finalists announced November 8. Each finalist will receive $15K and in-kind support to go into production. Finalists have until November 14 to decide if they want to participate and sign the program acceptance paperwork. Pre-production kicks off on November 15.

Greenlight Equipment Form Online

The Greenlight form is required for advanced equipment checkout such as the Red camera or grip truck or filming a large production that is not a class project or university insurance is needed for equipment rentals. Greenlight can be found in the Forms section on the Production Center Website

Actuality Media Documentary Teams


Actuality Media leads global experiential education programs for people who want to tell stories that matter. On each trip, students produce documentaries that feature the work of international changemakers during a month-long outreach. In 2019, Reels on Vimeo. Actuality Media is taking student crews to India, Belize and Vietnam. Biola's University Communications and Marketing (UCM) is looking to hire student site reps for a feature film production being filmed at Biola on Oct. 13-14 and Oct 20-21 (6 a.m. and 8 p.m.)  Site reps acts as a location manager for Biola and work on set with the film's location scout to ensure Biola locations are maintained well and that the film crew has what they need.
