As federal trials linked to MBB continue, Arizona AD Heeke says he isn't sure if the NCAA will wait until legal matters are adjudicated to act, but posits that it will use "as many resources as possible" to determine whether violations occurred, adding: "I think the NCAA has been waiting and certainly has had communication with a number of universities around the country so that as this continues to progress, they’d want to be moving forward as fast as they can." The NCAA last week said it is closely monitoring the trials. "If information relevant to potential NCAA violations is uncovered, we will continue to follow up and investigate all the facts." (link); DePaul officials say they have not been contacted by federal prosecutors: "DePaul University takes seriously the high standards of conduct expected in our athletics department. To date, federal prosecutors have not contacted us about the investigation into college basketball recruiting or statements included in testimony this week in federal court in the Southern District of New York. We will fully cooperate if contacted in the future by federal law enforcement, the Department of Justice or the NCAA.” (link)
Maryland booster Jacklitsch was removed from the team's travel group to Michigan going into the weekend after student-athletes saw his name on the passenger manifest. News came out last week that Jacklitsch said of former FB student-athlete McNair: "As much as we hate to say this, Jordan didn't do what Jordan was supposed to do. A trainer like [Maryland athletic trainer] Wes Robinson thinks a kid's properly hydrated and runs a drill set up for kids that are properly hydrated, and when the kid didn't drink the gallon he knew he had to drink, that's going to send the wrong signal to the person running the drill." Following the comments, Terps student-athletes indicated they did not want Jacklitsch around team activities. AD Evans declined to comment to ESPN about the comments or the travel situation. (link)
For now, success at the FCS level is enough for James Madison, with officials indicating the FB program is not quite ready to make the leap to FBS. And while there is acknowledgment that if the right conference called, JMU would listen, AD Bourne is adamant that listening is not the same as leaving. "The response to that hasn't changed. We will look at options that are beneficial to us and meet the criteria for us to be successful. Right now, I don't see an option like that." Prez Alger notes that TV contracts for schools outside the 'Power 5' aren't lucrative enough to justify making the leap in most cases: "We have studied the issue, but right now we're focused on winning another FCS national championship and being competitive nationally every year." JMU booster Caudle adds: "It's a financial model that doesn't work. It's purgatory, going somewhere like the Sun Belt Conference. That's what I call it. Frankly, we'd go bankrupt and we'd lose the momentum we've built in our program. ... I just don't see the attraction of giving away what we have with a chance to play for a national championship, and the best we're going to do is get invited to the Bahamas Bowl a couple of days before Christmas." But, never say never. Bourne also says that if the AAC were to call that "I think we'd probably give them a call back." (link)
William & Mary boss Huge, alongside UNLV AD Reed-Francois review the keys to building momentum via early wins for new ADs in an AthleticDirectorU conversation. Huge: "During my first year, I had a rule that anyone who wanted to see me, I made time for them. It was important to understand the culture from those within the institution and beyond. […] If you lead compassionately, if you’re transparent, and you set the expectations early, when you start to make changes, people will know you are doing it from a place with the institution and the student-athletes at the forefront of those decisions." Reed-Francois: "I asked for a list of our top 50 donors and made sure to call all of them before my initial press conference. […] Some of our donors have become great mentors to me as they have built huge enterprises." Lots more. (link)

As Akron continues searching for a new president, interim Prez Green has explained that one of his major goals is getting the university's finances in order so that his successor will be in the best possible position to succeed. Athletics, Green says, is an especially difficult piece of the puzzle to solve even though AD Williams has run the department well. "It's one of those dilemmas that all university presidents struggle with. On one hand, athletics are part of the college tradition at most universities in one form or another. ... On the other hand, athletics are expensive -- and in some parts, quite expensive." To wit, the Zips' athletic budget of $33M brings in revenues that only account for roughly a quarter of the overall costs. In addition to continuing to cultivate donor relationships, Akron plans to continue utilizing an initiative, started by former Prez Wilson, that focuses on recruiting in-state players, thereby taking advantage of a state program that provides subsidies for every resident student who graduates. Williams: "We're a regional institution. The vast majority of our students are from Ohio. It stands to reason that our sports teams should have that as an element of who we are." (link)
1.Question's @TaiMBrown chats with Brown Assoc. AD for Diversity & Inclusion Hunter coming off of the NCAA's #InclusionWeek. Hunter's keys: "Inclusion is the actionable item when we talk about diversity. Diversity looks good on paper and externally, but Inclusion is necessary for diverse voices to be heard and their ideas to possibly be implemented. […] We have to make sure our diverse population of student-athletes are integrated into campus and have a network beyond just those in athletics. They need to find a sense of family and community amongst marginalized groups. […] It is important for a person in this position to be in a senior level role because Diversity and Inclusion initiatives don't trickle up, they only trickle down from the top." (link)
Saturday's Red River Showdown between Oklahoma and Texas was the highest rated sporting event of the day and Fox's highest rated game this season, recording a 4.3. (link); Meanwhile, SEC on CBS continues its ratings rise as Saturday's LSU v. Florida game was up 19% versus last year with a 3.1. (link)
USA Today's Wolken with his weekly 'Misery Index.' Starts with his view of the HC compensation marketplace, "...the numbers on the contract are just a reflection of what the people running colleges and universities are made to believe the market is, a process heavily influenced by a small number of skilled agents who have helped set that market themselves by getting their clients bigger and more fortified contracts and using them as a baseline for what their next batch of clients should get because, well, that’s the market." This week's Top 5: Auburn, Louisville, Michigan State, Oklahoma & BYU. Trending: Vanderbilt, Missouri, Syracuse, Navy & Kansas State. (link)
According to a 2016 study by the Academy of Management, employees spend an average of 8 hours per week answering work-related emails after leaving the office. In addition, a 2015 Harris Poll conducted for the American Psychological Association found that 30% of men and 23% of women regularly bring work home. Consequently, the Wall Street Journal's Kitchen explores ways for individuals to combat the "Always On" phenomenon using the very technology that makes it easier to do additional work from home. For one, Kitchen suggests utilizing Google Calendar's "Working Hours" function that lets you automatically reject colleagues who set meetings outside of set time windows. Additionally, Apple's new iOS 12 includes enhanced Do Not Disturb settings, allowing users to turn off notifications at certain times or even certain locations. Meanwhile, Essentialism author McKeown contends that being selective with your time turns it into a valuable commodity, ultimately earning employees more respect and making them more productive when they are "on." He adds: "Modern culture now acts upon us so constantly that we start reacting to it rather than acting for ourselves. ... We have to dismantle always-on before it dismantles us." (link)

Kansas AD Long with updated thoughts on Jayhawks FB HC Beaty: "David’s our football coach. I’m not going to comment game by game. He’s our football coach. You know we got a couple of wins there, won back-to-back games, which is something we hadn’t done here in a while. We’re halfway through and we made it to the bye week. We’ll get some people back healthy and then we’ll see how we finish the second half of the season." (link); KU Chancellor Girod urging state Legislature to increase funding to higher education and approve the Kansas Board of Regents' $85M budget request, $33M of which would land in Lawrence. (link)
Alabama State Interim AD Williams brings former ASU staffer Terrell back to Montgomery as Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations. Terrell most recently did a stint as the Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Austin (TX) Parks and Recreation Department. Williams: "We are extremely excited to have Mrs. Terrell join our Hornet family. Her familiarity with Alabama State University coupled with her diverse skill set will immediately impact our department in a positive manner." (link); Lots of promotions in Coral Gables, including Asst. AD Cohen to Assoc. AD for Major Gifts for Miami (FL). (link)
Syracuse is the latest to use Influencer (INFLCR) to help deliver content. SU Creative Director Nix: "Our student athletes are an extension of our university, and with the help of INFLCR we now can deliver shareable content to our student athletes that showcases their experiences, memories, and accomplishments at Syracuse University." The launch with 'Cuse set a company record, as 83 FB student-athletes and coaches were activated in less than 48 hours and players combined to download and share 318 content items from more than 1,700 pieces available to them. (link)
Also Noticed: Oklahoma parts ways with FB DC Stoops. The second link here is The Athletic's 'Coaching Tracker,' which will inevitably start to pick up speed as the college FB season advances. (link, link); CBS Sports hoops reporter Rothstein, "Sources: The NCAA is evaluating different concepts so that all college basketball programs will play the same amount of games each season. Concepts are based on how to include MTE's in each program's schedule." (link); Albany has new tailgating policies to "improve the fan experience while also focusing on the safety and well-being of our campus community and guests." In part, tailgating hours reduced from six hours before kickoff to four and must end 15 minutes before first kick & no more amplified music can be played from cars. (link); Baylor booster Klepper and his attorneys deny the university's claim that Klepper "hinted" that his release of the recording proving former Board chair Willis made lewd and racist comments hinged on BU paying off a $3M claim of Klepper's against the institution.
