LMC Family and Community Newsletter
October 8th - October 12th, 2018
  • Throughout the year, look here for shout outs and appreciations for our community members!  Or even better, send a shout out of your own to be published in the weekly newsletter.  Submit your shout out by emailing it to Kelly McGuire - kmcguire@lmc896.org
  • Shout out to Fiona S. for the incredible donation of 100 mouse pads for the digital arts lab, main office, and more!  These mouse pads are incredibly attractive and bring a pop of color to our classrooms and office.  Thank you so much!
  • Shout out to Shelley G. for stepping in to serve as our LMC webmaster!  Many have said that the LMC website is one of their favorites of City schools and we certainly keep our webmaster busy.  A second thank you to teacher David Lai who does an amazing job of sharing photos and special event announcements.  Thank you so much for your support!
  • Shout out to Pam K. who is working to ensure that LMC has a big presence on social media this year.  Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites are where many NY'ers get their news and we need to keep them up to date about the ongoings at LMC.
  • Shout out to the 50+ parents who came out out for LMC Open Classrooms.  We loved seeing you and having you in our school.  We hope to see you for our next Open Classroom visit at 8:30am on November 15th.
  • A shout out to all who have donated to the direct appeal!  We are so appreciative of your work to help make LMC a special place for all kids.
This Week at LMC
  • Student council campaign season wrapped up last week with the big vote and council members are now in place.  We are so thankful to all of our students who ran for LMC Student Council.  Please know that we need you for other special events and clubs, including the LMC GSA, Matadors, and school tours!
  • 6th graders worked together to build bridges, both as a part of a science design project, but just as important - to build teamwork and communication with new projectmates.

Dear LMC Families,

This Friday LMC will hold our first community day of the school year.  Community days have been a fixture of LMC culture for the past ten years.  When we first designed community days we were only thinking about building community within our school.  Since that time we have both held strong to that purpose, but we've added in elements of service to community, and an exploration of identity and sharing.  Community days are built around our school advisory program and we strive for advisories to be places where students engage in discussion about the different experiences they have in the world.  LMC is a diverse community and we want to ensure that our students learn from this experience before heading off to high school.

Last week also marked the end of the school wide, baseline assessments, commonly referred to as "MOSLS".  "Phew", say both students and LMC teachers alike.  These assessments, while certainly challenging, provide us with important information about how students are performing in connection to grade level standards.  The MOSLS are administered under official testing conditions and all time limits, test modifications, etc. are fully implemented.  These assessments are now being scored by LMC teachers in each department.  Teachers are not allowed to score their students' papers for the official evaluation - that is done by a member of the same department (English, Science, Math) who has been trained to score a particular exam.  Results of these MOSL assessments will be shared with you later this month through Jumprope.   Please note that these baseline assessments are scored, but they do not count toward your child's grade.  Please also know that the vast majority of students perform very poorly on these baseline assessments as they are measures of what students should be able to complete by the end of this school year.  When we conduct a second version of these assessments, in January, you will likely see growth in student performance.

Best,
Kelly McGuire

Can you help?
Here are some things we could use this week:
  • ARE YOU AN ARCHITECT?  LMC is seeking to post a banner / flag on the outside of our doorway on New Street and we need your help filing a permit to do  so.  If this is an area you know or have expertise we'd greatly appreciate your support.  Please email Nicki Francis at nicki@khushispa.com if you can help.
  • Our teachers meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays for adult learning and collaboration.  We meet until just about 4pm and in those hours following dismissal teachers get hungry!  If you'd like to help, sending in a little snack for our teachers on those days is always appreciated!
