After last Spring’s postponement, the annual Boston music showcase and festival, the Rock & Roll Rumble, will return in 2019. Organized and independently produced by Boston Emissions host, Anngelle Wood, the Rumble returns to its nine night run in April at a revitalized ONCE Somerville, the 300-capacity event space on Highland Avenue.
About its absence and upcoming return, Wood says, "I could not be more ready to get back to work. I heard from a lot of people who felt the void this past Spring. There are great things in store. I'm back, the show is back, and ONCE is back — all reinvigorated and ready to go. I anticipate an incredible year, and I look forward to working with the new staff at ONCE."
The first official Rumble, often called "The Rumble at the Rat," that took place in 1979 at the renowned Rathskellar in dirty old Boston's Kenmore Square featured a list of legendary acts to include Mission of Burma, Le Peste, Lyres, Classic Ruins, and the victorious, The Neighborhoods. Expect surprises on this, the ruby anniversary year.
While we celebrate long-held Rumble traditions, 2019 will bring a tune-up to its format. Since its official 104.1 WBCN beginnings 40 years ago, the hotly contested preliminaries happened within six nights in the first week (later, the added Wednesday day of rest became a way to help revelers, well, rest). The nine night celebratory schedule will continue, and preliminaries will now be split over two weeks.
