Principal's Corner

Dear North Davis families,

Providing a safe and inclusive environment for our students is a priority for me and for the staff at NDE.  Each year, we administer the Youth Truth survey to our 3rd-6th grade students in order to give them the opportunity to share their perceptions and feelings regarding school climate.

In conjunction with this year’s annual administration of the Youth Truth Student survey, DJUSD invites families to participate in the Youth Truth Family survey. This survey is now open, and will be open through November 16. You can find the link to the survey here:  Climate Data website.

The NDE Staff and I appreciate your feedback, and will work diligently in response to the student and family needs as reported through the Youth Truth surveys.  Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Message from the PTA

Hello North Davis Families,

We hope you will join us this Friday, October 26th from 5:00 to-9:00 p.m. at the Sudwerk Dock Store for a fun night out to support our school.  A portion of the proceeds from food and drink sales on Friday will be donated directly back to NDE.  Come and enjoy live music, fun activities, and a chance to connect with old and new friends at NDE.  Whether you bring your children or get a sitter, we hope you can stop by for a while and enjoy the evening!

Upcoming Events & Announcements:
· Our Fall Raffle is right around the corner and this year we have some incredible prizes to raffle off—more information about that will be coming home with your children soon.
· Save the Date! The NDE Spring Auction is scheduled for Friday, February 22 from 6:30–10:00 p.m. This is our largest and most important fundraiser of the year.  There will be live and online auctions, classroom art, and an all-around fun night out to celebrate and support NDE. Right now we are focusing on procuring auction items and we could use your help!  If you can volunteer 30 minutes of your time to send a few emails or stop by some local businesses, we'd love your support.  Email us at nde.auction@gmail.com to get started!

I am also pleased to share that at our October PTA meeting, the members present approved the NDE PTA supporting Measure M on this November’s ballot.  Measure M directly funds facilities projects for aging schools and buildings in our district.  In PHASE ONE of the plan, North Davis Elementary is scheduled to receive $16 million dollars’ worth of improvements, including:
  • New bathrooms and drinking fountains
  • New multi-purpose room
  • Safety and security upgrades
  • Bike and car drop-off improvements
  • Technology infrastructure upgrade
  • Front office redesign
Visit www.djusd.net/about/initiatives/facilityplanning to see the full facilities master plan online and plans for each school. Click on “DJUSD Facility Master Plan” on the left-hand side of the page.  We encourage you to vote YES on M to support improvements for ours and other schools throughout Davis.

You can reach me anytime with questions and ideas at brenna.c.hughes@gmail.com.  I look forward to seeing you all this Friday at the Sudwerk Dock Store!

Warmly,
Brenna

Fitness Corner

The Kids in Motion Fitness programming offered this year include: Jump Rope Club, T/K and Kindergarten fitness, Primary fitness, Intermediate fitness (including fencing), and 6th grade cross-age mentoring (with 1st grade). This is my final week of describing each program individually. My focus this week is on 6th grade cross-age mentoring (with 1st grade).

The 6th grade cross-age fitness mentoring is in its second year. We found that due to the length of time that the 1st grade sessions run (throughout the entire morning on Fridays) we were struggling to find enough adult help. At the same time, the 6th grade had to give up their Book Buddies (cross-age mentoring) due to their rotation scheduling. In meeting the needs of all students and our programming, it was the perfect fit to have our 6th grade students lead an activity with the 1st graders on Friday mornings.

On Wednesdays, as part of the 6th grade fitness rotations, Mrs. Heeren leads an activity with ½ of the students. This is designed as training. Those who have been trained each week are able to sign up to work with one of the three first grade sessions. The following week, the other ½ of the 6th grade is trained and ready to lead the activity if they sign up to do so.

On Fridays, 6th grade students come out in groups of three to lead one of the stations with support and supervision from Mrs. Heeren. There are three sessions during the morning, and three separate groups of 6th grade students come out to assist (= 9 students each week). These students miss up to 30 minutes of their in class or recess time for the Friday they are assigned. All of Mr. Stewart’s class has tried this opportunity once. Half of Miss Spence’s class has tried this opportunity. The other half will have the opportunity in the next two weeks. Ms. Disney’s class will have the opportunity in November and December. After the new year, students who are interested will sign up to assist a second time.

Feedback from teachers has been great! And the first grade students thoroughly enjoy their time with the 6th grade students. The 6th grade students who have assisted thus far have offered the following feedback about their experiences: “I like seeing them smile and having fun”; “It’s great when we help them do something they didn’t think they could do”; “I didn’t know teaching was this hard!”
