House of Commons reception

Severn Trent Water hosted a reception in the Members Dining Room of the House of Commons on behalf of the Moors for the Future Partnership on Tuesday 11th September. The event was sponsored by MP for Penistone and Stockbridge, Angela Smith.

The reception was used to set out the Partnership’s plan to build on the achievements of the past 15 years, by using the Price Review Process (PR19) to raise awareness and support for blanket bog conservation.
By working with the Moors for the Future partners, local water companies will be able to improve water quality by reducing the amount of peat washed off the Peak District and South Pennine moors into the rivers and reservoirs.

Protecting this huge natural resource not only supports the water companies’ customers, but also increases biodiversity, reduces flooding and stores carbon.

A flying finish for UAV’s summer season

We had a successful summer with the Unmanned Ariel Vehicle (UAV) collecting baseline data at a massive landscape scale.

The team are also planning to use this state-of-the-art technology in a cutting-edge experiment to digitally code individual sphagnum moss species in a bid to increase the accuracy of the data in the future.

Monitoring gains momentum

Around 20 of our dedicated volunteers worked on the annual vegetation campaign from July to September.  The team surveyed over 400 two metre by two metre squares, looking at the percentage cover of every species within each quadrat.  That is a lot of detail to record!  The results will be added to our long-term datasets to look at the impact that conservation works are having on the landscape.

Between 20 and 30 volunteers are currently carrying out the annual dipwell campaign across the Peak District and South Pennine moors. The hardy bunch will head out every Thursday from now until Christmas to measure the water levels at monitoring sites across the moors.  We’ll let you know how the campaign goes in the next issue of MoorNEWS!
FireWatch fulfils mission and closes down for winter

In September Operation FireWatch ended as the weather cooled and the rain came down.  During the hot, dry summer 80 volunteers were stationed at moorland vantage points throughout the Peak District National Park and South Pennines to look out for fires.

The campaign could not have gone ahead without the willingness and dedication of staff and volunteers.  In total 153 shifts were covered, equalling more than 340 hours.  A huge thank you to everyone who was involved!

The Cowburn tunnel’s construction may have finished 125 years ago,
but the conservation work taking place on the landscape above is
continuing to help protect the moors for generations to come.

We have been taking the Bogtastic Van to communities in and around the Peak District and South Pennines during its first summer with Moors for the Future Partnership.

Staff have taken the van to nearly 40 events this summer alone, engaging with almost 3000 people!

A life-changing event gave volunteer
Tom Helliwell the opportunity to
rekindle his love of the great outdoors.
