CLCI Autumn Newsletter Members and Supporters

Welcome to the CLCI Autumn newsletter – summer seems to have passed very quickly!

Important Issues
Registration Update
There has been no further news from the UK Charity Commission but we will send out an update as soon as we have one. We are currently looking at interim solutions to allow us to receive funding from sponsors.
2019 work plan
The planning process for activities in 2019 has now begun. Please email the General secretary if you have any comments, insights or suggestions before the 4th November.
AGM
The first AGM will be held on 7th December at the Excellence in Paediatrics  (EiP) conference in Prague. EiP have invited CLCI to prepare a policy forum and round table as we did in Vienna last year. Members will receive the Annual Report, including the work plan and any resolutions to be voted on at the AGM, in November.
.
Website:
We are still inviting members to send any content for the website. We would like to feature our member organisations and their activities, as well as a profile for each of our trustees. Please contact the General Secretary with anything you'd like included. We should have a draft site ready for viewing (without content) by mid-November.
Funding
Continued progress on funding is contingent on us receiving our UK registration number and establishing a bank account. Four potential funders are ready to support CLCI with unrestricted grants or donations as soon as we can receive funds.
Major Events
"Vaccines for all: Leaving no one behind", A life-course approach to vaccination: Delivering health and wellbeing for all across all ages
European Health Forum Gastein, 7th October
The session was in workshop format and speakers included John Ryan (Director, Dir C - Public health and crisis management, DGSanté), Karin Kadenbach MEP, Daphne Holt (CLCI Chair) and Emilie Karafillakis (the Vaccine Confidence Project).
Due to delays to Daphne’s flight, the presentation was delivered by Malcolm Taylor - thank you Malcolm for stepping in at very short notice. The session was very well received: more than 80 people attended and actively participated. Articles and interviews from the session can be found here and Daphne's slides are here
An animation prepared by our collaborator - the Health Policy Partnership (HPP) was premiered at the session and this resource will become available on our website.

We thank both MSD and HPP for their help and support.
Long-term access to vaccination across Europe: How to improve the ecosystem
European Health Forum Gastein, 7th October
CLCI member Professor Carlo Signorelli was part of an expert panel invited by Sanofi to discuss long-term access to vaccination across Europe and how to best ensure sustainability of access. The workshop explored the ecosystem and how to improve it from different stakeholders’ perspectives in order to address current challenges.
Members and Supporters Activities
Published Paper – Vaccines Today:
CLCI member Gary Finnegan, editor of the online magazine Vaccines Today, was the lead author on a paper published in the journal Vaccines Lessons Learned from an Online Vaccines Communications Project. Professor David Salisbury and Daphne Holt also contributed as members of the editorial board.
ILC – UK New research on flu:
New research by the International Longevity Centre UK (ILC-UK) concludes that Governments should take into account the economic and health benefits of flu vaccination when assessing its value. The paper found that the greatest economic benefit from flu vaccination is derived from reducing the cost of lost employment and care giving.

ILC-UK argues that the cost-benefit analysis is highly sensitive to vaccine administration costs and urges Governments to look for ways to deliver vaccines more efficiently.

ILC-UK will also be holding an event at the Science Museum in London - The Future of Infectious Diseases: 100 years of the Spanish Flu. Please click here for further details.

Initiative on Global Health Issues – Italian Senate:
The initiative, aimed at expressing the strategic dimension for Italy in the context of international cooperation on global health issues, featured CLCI member Professor David Salisbury (Associate Fellow Global Health Security at Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs in London) who spoke about Global Vaccine Challenges. In August, the Senate voted to remove the legal obligation to vaccinate school children in Italy.
Balmis Institute: “The best Vaccine in the World – Knowledge”
The Balmis Institute will celebrate the XV International Update Seminar on Vaccines in Almeria (Spain) on 8-9th November. If you wish to attend please contact Francisco directly.

The courses are designed to provide the latest updates and essential knowledge to help you stay up-to-date with the latest best practice advice from across the main paediatric specialities.
