Sheffield BID releases guide to the Devonshire Quarter
Sheffield BID has released its latest guide, showcasing the Devonshire Quarter’s independent shops, bars and restaurants.
Devonshire Quarter: The Heart of Independent Sheffield is a 32-page booklet which promotes the people and places that make the Devonshire Quarter renowned for its eclectic mix of businesses. 15,000 copies have been distributed across the city and beyond, to encourage people to visit the Devonshire Quarter and discover its delights for themselves.
The Devonshire Quarter is home to many a Sheffield legend. It’s the place where Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker broke his arm as he fell from a window whilst trying to impress a girl. It’s the place where the Arctic Monkeys were discovered – trying their hand at underage drinking that is - by Frog and Parrot landlord Nick Simmonite. The music pub is also the spot where Joe Cocker signed album deals.
As well as being home to some of Sheffield’s favourite anecdotes and urban legends, the Devonshire Quarter has also given the city Warp Records, the record label which started in the back room of FON record shop in the 90s. The True North empire, which started with the opening of Forum Bar and Kitchen, has now grown into a network of ten pubs and bars across Sheffield and Derbyshire, including three venues on Devonshire Street, the heart of The Devonshire Quarter.
Today, the streets of the Devonshire Quarter continue to be filled with the unusual and exciting. The area has been praised for maintaining its independent character. It has battled through the adversity faced by the high street by providing shoppers with something different, special, and customer service which often goes above and beyond.

Following the release of the BID’s guide to Chapel Walk, another famous shopping area in Sheffield, and the second edition of Experience Sheffield City Centre: An Independent Guide, Sheffield BID is now focusing on promoting the Devonshire Quarter as a great place to visit and invest.
Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “Devonshire Quarter: The Heart of Independent Sheffield is the latest in a series of publications produced by Sheffield BID to promote the city centre as a dynamic, diverse and vibrant place to live, work and do business.
“Our latest guide focuses on the hard-working people and popular businesses that make the Devonshire Quarter one of the most popular areas of the city for retail, hospitality and entertainment. Sheffield has a unique offer of smaller, independent businesses and for decades the Devonshire Quarter has helped them grow and thrive. We hope to see those businesses continue to thrive, and new ones to start, in the heart of independent Sheffield.”
Devonshire Quarter: The Heart of Independent Sheffield is being distributed to outlets across Sheffield City Region and is available to pick up at Unit 1, Surrey Street (next to the Winter Garden), alongside the BID’s other promotional materials showcasing the city centre.
