What's Happening at Burnt Rock Farm

by Justin Rich

In case anyone didn't hear my giant sigh of relief echo over the mountains a week and a half ago, we finished digging our sweetpotatoes on Friday 10/12, right before a pretty cold pattern set in.
It's always a bit stressful bringing in that crop, because sweetpotatoes have a tricky twin set of needs:  a long growing season, but with as little exposure to cold as possible.  Because of that, they are our last "major" crop to come out in Fall, but early-mid October weather can be sunny and 72 (like last year) or cloudy, rainy, and 45 (like this year), the slide from the former to the latter influencing my stress level to no small degree.

It's been at least 3 weeks since you've seen pictures of our cover crops and rainbow coalition of tractors and implements, so I'll just give in and show you.
I was a bit short on time last Sunday, and needed to disc in the sweetpotato vines and seed that field to cover crops, all in a field 5 miles away (that's kinda far by tractor), and all starting around 5PM.  Fancy that, the disc harrow has a fitting on the back that allows me to hitch the grain drill to the disc harrow, which is of course hitched to the tractor.  So I filled the grain drill with seed, and set to hitching it all together.  The 10' wide implement train was decidedly wobbly driving down Main Rd at dusk, but I got it all up the road, deconstructed the train, worked in the sweetpotato vines, dropped the disc and hitched the drill, and seeded winter rye all before 9.  It was a very neat and tidy operation.
The reason I was so late getting going that Sunday was that earlier in the day Elias and I drove in the East Charlotte Tractor Parade (3rd year in a row for him!), which is a great agricultural festival and seems to always occur on a bluebird day.  You should definitely go next year.  That is, if you like tractors, and specifically, like watching tractors drive by single-file at 2mph.  It's always the 2nd Sunday in October.  Mark your 2019 calendars now!
Back to washing potatoes!
Beautiful fall orange colors, eh?

Happy Halloween!

Why carve a pumpkin when you can dress one up in veggies and make it REALLY scary!

Parsnips!

Please don't think of parsnips as white carrots.  They are, in fact, their own vegetable and are much more dense and have a deeper sweetness than carrots.  Like carrots, they roast up beautifully, but are also a great addition to soups and stews.  They also store extremely well in the veggie bin in your 'fridge. So, feel free to tuck them away for later in the winter./

Here is some additional info on Parsnips and how you can use them.

Pick-Up Information

When, Where and How

  • Pick-up is at the Kingsbury Farm just north of the iron bridge on Route 100 in Warren.  When you pull into the driveway, go past the barn and the house.  The pick-up area is in the wash house which is on the right-hand side of the building that is perpendicular to the house.
  • You may pick-up your share on Wednesdays between noon and 6:30pm
  • Bring a bag or box - you will need it to put all of your goodies in. If you aren't heading right home after pick-up, bring a cooler to make sure that everything stays fresh - especially when it is really hot or really cold.
  • Check your name off of the list so we know that you have picked up your share.
  • Look on the large chalk board to see which items you should be taking for your share. Be sure you are looking at your share size and then methodically work your way around the semi-circle.  If you do this, the lightest, most crushable items should be at the top of your bag.
