November 4: Daylight Savings Time Ends

Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour! It's such a rare thing to get an opportunity for an extra hour of sleep, so don't miss out!

November 6 is Election Day!

One of the most important things to do this November is to fulfill our duty as citizens and VOTE! Need more information? We have free non-partisan voter guides from the League of Women's Voters at the library, and you can also check out the following online resources:

  • Maine Voter Information Lookup Service
    • Voting information specific to Thomaston, including sample ballots, where to register to vote, and where to vote on Election Day (the American Legion Hall on Main St).
  • VoteSmart.org
    • Information about politicians on the federal and state levels, including bios, voting records, positions on key topics, speeches, funding sources and more.
  • RocktheVote.org
    • Information on voting rights, voter registration, important dates & deadlines, and more. Great for first-time voters.

November 7: Patrisha McLean Presents "Havana's Children"

We are thrilled to announce that Camden photojournalist Patrisha McLean will be at the library on Wednesday, November 7 at 5:30 pm to present a slideshow of her photographs of Havana children and talk about her travels to Cuba. She visited Havana three times on her own in the Obama-era interval when the country was more open to tourism than it had and has been since the 1950s.

The way the children were playing in the street, she says, “reminded me of Rockland, when I first came to Maine 25 years ago before computers.” Her first photo project was about these Rockland children and called "Children of Fulton Street".

The exhibit “Havana’s Children” will be at the library during the month of November.

Patrisha writes, “On the streets where I roamed with my camera to the sounds of roosters crowing and the smell of overripe guava, there was no internet, one or two channels of exclusively Communist TV programming and Disney and Barbie only on faded clothes sent over from family in America. Even crayons were a luxury, with one teacher calling after me through a classroom grated window for a single pen or pencil for the school.

“So childhood play was all about imagination—boys played baseball with sticks, medical rubber gloves and frayed tennis balls; Russian cigarette box tops were traded like baseball cards; a flattened tin cap stood in as a hopscotch marker and a length of rubber was a skipping rope.

“It was striking how much the children in Havana didn’t have. But it was as striking how resourceful children can be, and how much joy can be had with so little.”

Patrisha’s website is www.patrishamclean.com.

New Conference Room!

We have officially leased Room 204, upstairs from the main room of the library, as our new conference and research room!

The Maine State Prison Showroom generously discounted beautiful new bookshelves for the room so that we can also move our Reference section upstairs! It will be the perfect place to do genealogical and other research.

The conference room will be open for use during library hours for any nonprofit organizations at no charge! Call us at (207) 354-2453 for more information and to check the calendar.

The Craft of Writing

A new group has evolved from the most recent writing class held at the library by author and mentor Lee Heffner! The Craft of Writing will meet weekly on Fridays from 11 am to 1 pm in the new Conference Room at the library beginning November 9. All writers committed to their writing practice are welcome to participate. Commitment does not mean publication. If you want to grow as a writer, learn from others, share your work and listen to the work of others, please join us.

We Need Your Input!

Did you know our staff meets once a month to decide what books and DVDs to order? Our next purchasing meeting is Thursday, November 8! Is there a hot new release you've been crossing your fingers we'll order? Let us know and we will add it to our list for consideration. If we are not able to add it to our collection, we can request the item through interlibrary loan for you. Click here to submit your recommendation!

Upcoming Events

November 12: Library Closed for Veteran's Day

We thank all those who have served and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. The library will reopen as usual on Tuesday, November 13 at 11 am.

November 13: Let's Talk About It Book Club

Funded by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council and facilitated by author and mentor Lee Heffner, the Let's Talk About It book group will meet on Tuesday, November 13 at 11 am. We continue the series, "Becoming American: Struggles, Successes, and Symbols," with The Way to Rainy Mountain by N. Scott Momaday.

From the publisher:

"Long ago, the Kiowa Indians began a journey from the headwaters of the Yellowstone River in what is now western Montana to their present home in the southern Plains. In the course of that migration a cultural and psychological revolution occurred.

The Way to Rainy Mountain recalls the journey of Tai-me, the sacred Sun Dance doll, and of Tai-me’s people in three unique voices: the legendary, the historical, and the contemporary. It is also the personal journey of N. Scott Momaday, who on pilgrimage to the grave of his Kiowa grandmother, traversed the same route taken by his forebears and in so doing confronted his Kiowa heritage. It is an evocation of three things in particular: a landscape that is incomparable, a time that is gone forever, and the human spirit, which endures."

These discussions are always thought-provoking and lively, and we welcome anyone to join for one book or the whole series!  Refreshments are served. The final book in the series will be Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen by Jose Antonio Vargas. Copies are available at the library.

November 16: Communi-TEA

Join us for afternoon tea on November 16 from 3 to 4:30 PM! Delicious treats and hot tea will be served, and all are welcome in the community living room at Thomaston Public Library.

We would also like to encourage folks to support their neighbors by bringing to Communi-TEA a non-perishable food, pet care, or personal care item to donate to the food pantry!

November 19: Family Movie & Pizza Night

Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet will hit theaters on November 21, so join us on Monday, November 19 at 5 pm to watch the first Wreck-It Ralph! Our wonderful local Flagship Cinemas Thomaston will not only be providing popcorn for this event but also giving away two tickets to the new movie as door prizes!

Wreck-It Ralph longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix. Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun, Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz, a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it's "Game Over" for the entire arcade?

Features the voice talents of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Mindy Kaling, and more!

The film will be shown with closed captions for the deaf and hard of hearing. As always, this event is free and open to all, and pajamas are welcome!

November 20: Intergenerational Book Club

On Tuesday November 20th at 2:30 pm the Thomaston Intergenerational Book Club will meet to discuss Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult.

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?

Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime. Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender, takes her case but gives unexpected advice: Kennedy insists that mentioning race in the courtroom is not a winning strategy. Conflicted by Kennedy’s counsel, Ruth tries to keep life as normal as possible for her family—especially her teenage son—as the case becomes a media sensation. As the trial moves forward, Ruth and Kennedy must gain each other’s trust, and come to see that what they’ve been taught their whole lives about others—and themselves—might be wrong.

On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together at the library to share their opinions and ideas about the selected book. All are welcome at the Thomaston Library on November 20th at 2:30  p.m.   If you live in Thomaston and would like to attend but need a ride, please call the library at 354-2453 a week before the discussion date.

December's selection is The Moth, edited by Catherine Burns, and copies will be available at the library. The Intergenerational Book Club selections for 2019 have also been chosen and new bookmarks with the titles and discussion dates will be available!
