SARG news
Autumn is here - it's my favorite time of the year (as you will see I have a lot of favorite times of the year-just like Odie pictured above!) I love Halloween and anything pumpkin. Thanksgiving is such a lovely time to spend with family and before you know it- Winter will be here. Brr. But let's not rush things! Here at SARG we never rush things. We take it one giant leap at a time. These are just a few of the irons we have in the fire! The annual yard sale was an enormous success, it was held over 5 days, encompassing 2 weekends. We had a wonderful volunteer effort that brought it all together. Thank you to those that came out to support us either by helping set up and run the sale or shopping! I know I grabbed some bargains. So much fun. On the heals of the yard sale was the golf tournament! I'm not a golfer, but I wish I was -everyone looked to be having a grand time. Thank you to all involved in planning and executing such an amazing event. The free Spay/Neuter clinic is run every month - we are so thankful to Cindy Biscay who takes care of all the details for this amazing community outreach program. And now SARG is actually starting to get things in order for the annual Paws for Life Gala on April 12! We have already received many donations - thank you so much for those. We couldn't pull this off every spring without all of you. Speaking of Spring it will be here before you know it!
What types of Peanut Butter are Safe for Dogs?
Dogs Love peanut butter. I can't say that I blame them I love it too! However some manufacturers are using Xylitol as a sweetener. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. Just a very small amount can be fatal. Preventivevet.com has compiled a list of 5 brands to avoid (as of April 13th 2018)

- Go Nuts, Co
- Krush Nutrition
-Nuts 'N More
-P28
-No Cow (previously called D's Naturals)

For more information on Xylitol and how it affects your pooches click on the link below to be directed to preventivevet.com

SARG Thank You Picnic!
The SARG Thank You Picnic was a huge success. Melton Lake was the perfect location and the weather was fantastic. Lots of pooches came out to share their love with everyone, and snag some snacks too! If you didn't make it this year make sure to put it on your to do list for next year.

Big Dog Jack

There really aren't enough words to describe what big dog Jack means to our family, but these pictures help. Jack had a rough first 6 years of life spent in a bad hoarding situation and then undergoing heart worm treatment after he was rescued by SARG. But, like all dogs should, he is living the sweet life now. He spends his days side by side with our little boy Bruce, basking in the sun, going for One short walk, and tagging along for any adventure his humans go on. He still gets spurts of puppy-like energy and loves to play! He is so incredibly patient. He has a clingy dog or a crazy, messy faced girl glued to him at all times and he doesn't seem to mind. Our daughter, Evelyn, is obsessed with him and I am so grateful she has such an awesome dog to grow up with. We really don't deserve the love dogs give. But seriously, don't get a dog if you aren't willing to let it live out its days as part of your family. If you are willing to do that, please consider adopting instead of shopping! You won't regret it. Happy 2 year anniversary to our biggest boy!

Thank you Amanda for sharing Big Dog Jack's story with us. We are so happy he has found such an amazing forever home!

Cats can Learn Sign Language!
Have you ever tried to teach your cat sign language? No, that’s not a joke—it can be done. An article in the June 2018 edition of Catnip, the newsletter of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, has an article entitled “Teaching Your Cat to ‘Sign’.”  But the article only supported what SARG already knew—cats can learn and respond to signs from American Sign Language (ASL).
Picasso is a deaf white cat—gorgeous, but deaf.  He recently was adopted from SARG in early April 2018 by Christy, a young woman thoroughly conversant with ASL, as both her parents are deaf.  She had already trained her dog in signing; as soon as Picasso arrived, she began his training too.
Christy reports that she is focusing on the main signs—“eat,” “no,” “come,” “hungry.”  She is also teaching Picasso a personalized sign that she adopted from her parents that catches his attention and lets him know that the person is trying to communicate with him.  Christy says, “My parents were required to use sign language with any of our animals regardless of whether they could hear or not.  Everyone has to communicate!”
Picasso is a happy, loving kitty living with his new mom and doggy brother—and all of them can communicate through sign language.
