$20,000 for music program

Anonymous donor gives to CMS

Music teacher Ariel Brown was at the Rockridge Out and About performance when an older gentleman approached him at the end of the jazz ensemble performance. Mr. Brown said he was too busy to talk, "but something told me to say hello."  The man shared that he had been a student in the music program at CMS in the early 1960's.  He told Mr. Brown he couldn't remember his former teacher's name, but that he had given him a great experience in orchestra there.  He said he had been hoping to make a donation in the memory of his teacher.  The two exchanged information.

The next day, the man told Mr. Brown he remembered his teacher's name: James Eeds. The man then told Mr. Brown he wished to make an unrestricted donation to the CMS music program for $20,000. "I was shocked to be sure," Mr. Brown said.  His only condition was that the purchases stay at Claremont in perpetuity.

Mr. Eeds died in 2004 at age 83. Mr. Brown found his obituary, and then tracked down his family. His brother lives in the Bay Area and Mr. Brown hopes the Eeds family will come to a CMS concert on Jan. 17.

As for what Mr. Brown will do with the generous and anonymous donation? "I'm shopping  as we speak," he said.  Our little auction elves have been busy all summer, soliciting items and loading them into our auction catalog, which is live right now. So, start shopping today, because the online portion of the auction ends Oct. 30 at 10 p.m.

Open House was a success!

Thanks to all who came out

Thank you to all the volunteers who gave up part of their Saturday to help with Claremont's Open House for prospective families this past weekend. A big shout out to Nicole Aruda for organizing the event and all the volunteers on the parent, student, teacher and administration panels as well as parents who sold t-shirts, lead tours and manned the snack table. Our teacher panel got a standing ovation and everyone was super impressed with the student panel made up of 8th graders: Sam, Lola, Nora & Georgia!

It was very exciting to see this small but mighty team on the trails over the last few weeks led by Coach Thomas in her inaugural season as coach.  Thanks for all your hard work, Coach.  We are already looking forward to next season! More photos are here.

Ride 4 a Reason

Come train with us!

Ride for a Reason is gearing up for our 11th annual bike ride to Sacramento on April 27.  This event brings attention to the ongoing problem of underfunded public schools and raises money to support our partner schools.  Last year, 250 students, teachers, parents and community members pedaled from Oakland to the steps of the State Capitol to advocate for greater funding for education and reform in the way that California funds its public schools.

Registration for all distances is now open on our website - http://rideforareason.weebly.com/  Discounted registration is available into early December.

The first training ride of the R4R 2019 season on October 6th was great.  14 riders came out to enjoy a beautiful ride along the edge of the bay.

The next ride training ride is Saturday, November 3 at 9 a.m. We’ll start again at Chevy’s in Emeryville and ride north to Shimada Friendship Park and back along the bay trail. The total distance is 15 miles. Rain cancels the ride. Text ride leader Jen Ryden with any questions at 510/207-5640.

For more experienced riders, the Middle Of The Road (MOTR) training group prepares riders to complete their first century from Oakland Tech to the Capitol in Sacramento. MOTR training rides start in January.
