NOVEMBER 2018

Fiber Artists of San Antonio

NOVEMBER PROGRAM
Pamela Bjork

“By immersing ourselves in the mythic threads of textiles and sacred objects from around the world, we come to the realization that as archetypal psychologist James Hillman says, ‘All things are full of Gods.’” ~ Pamela Bjork

Throughout the years, Pam has journeyed to five continents as a witness and participant to many ceremonies. A sky burial in Tibet, Buddhist fire ceremonies in Bhutan, healing sessions in Bali with a yogi whose God was the leach, Black Madonna sites in France, carnival in Venice, the Holy Week Procession in Sicily, the labyrinth at Chartres.

Along the way she shopped for the sacred, collecting objects of beauty, artifacts, and ceremonial textiles to re-color her life. Pam will bring some of her textile treasures from her travels and help us see the scared that has been persevered in these fiber art pieces of wisdom, Myth, history and culture. Please join us for a mythological adventure in textiles and stories with Pamela Bjork.

PREZ's NOTES

I had never attended a Cob Web sale and wow, I was very impressed by the turn out and all of you who either participated or came to purchase. I came home with fabric from Kitty’s table to start my new series of art work and thank you to all, who donated to the Marisol Deluna Foundation.  The kids are going to have plenty of use of patterns and fabric.  Thank you, Cynthia Anderson for organizing the sale.

Anita Centeno has been working on Annual Show and you have been doing a fantastic job, I can’t wait to see the show.

Jean Dahlgren just came back from France so I am hoping she will give us a report and a photo show of her trip.

I am have been carrying around the by-laws with me everywhere in case someone calls me to tell me to do my job correctly and so far I think I have been doing fine.  I am approachable, and I am willing to listen to what everyone has to say.  Just remember it is a volunteer job, we/I are doing our best and please remember we are a sisterhood of artist.  This is what I tell myself when I hear that I have not been doing my best.  This sisterhood is why I joined the group.

We are coming up to the holiday’s, this is the time that other need our help so my next challenge it to make ear warmers or beanies for the homeless.  They can be crocheted or sewn; Pinterest always has great ideas for these types of things.  Even if you make just one, you have helped that one person.

Thank you so much for allowing me to be me!

EVENTS  AND OPPORTUNITIES
44th Annual Juried Fiber Art Exhibition
All Things Possible in Fiber Art
Update November 2018

We can surely say we’ve met the halfway mark in planning for our FASA Annual Juried Fiber Art Exhibition, but the most exciting part is just around the corner!

The Call for Entry closed Friday October 15th, and 86 artists were able to successfully enter 218 pieces of art.  Of those 86 artists 43 are FASA members (50%), and 73 of all artists who entered live in the state of Texas (85%).  That’s great news in spite of the fact that the Call for Entry solicitations went out to many of the same organizations and businesses that were contacted last year.  Although we want to continue to extend the invite to artists around the country, it is wonderful when we get a great representation from within our members and within our state.

Thanks go out to all the members who participated this year, thank you for making FASA shine through your participation in this event. Our juror, Alana Coates, is busy making her final decisions as I write this update, and I am sure she will have an exciting representation of fiber art works for us to appreciate at our Exhibition opening at Say Si on Friday, December 7, 2018.  If you entered your work you will be receiving notice by email this weekend, October 26th through the 28th.  Regardless of whether your art is juried into the show by Alana or not, I can honestly say that all of the work that was submitted is impressive and it would be most difficult for me to make the selections.

We are hoping to be able to fit approximately 100 pieces of work into the gallery spaces, lucky for me this year to have ample space to show more work because of our partnership with Say Si and the size and space of their facilities.

Jean Dahlgren is busy making arrangements for the Pop-Up show, which will be held in conjunction with the Exhibit and for the duration of the show.  If you have already contacted her about your interest in participating she will be sending out important details to you soon.

In addition, if you did not wish to participate in the juried part of the Exhibit,
there will be an opportunity for you to make things possible in fiber art also by submitting a piece to be exhibited in the non-juried portion of the show called “Kennectivities.”

This is being organized by Carmen Goyette, the SPUTNIK Chairperson, and she is encouraging everyone to join in regardless if they consider themselves part of the Sunday meeting group or not.
Please see minutes from SPUTNIK meetings for details, or contact Carmen by email: bigskydevelopment@hotmail.com.

If your art work is juried into the show the acceptance notice will include instructions for shipping or delivering artwork.  We can accept delivery of artwork at the next FASA General Meeting on Monday November 12th at the Garden Center, however we welcome you to wait until the installation date, Monday November 26th at the Say Si Gallery between 9:00 am and noon to deliver your art in person as well.

I will be calling for a few volunteers at the SPUTNIK and FASA general meeting to help on the day of installation, and also on the day of the Opening to help with refreshments and meet and greet visitors.

Until next time….

Anita (Annie) Centeno
FASA 2nd VP - Exhibitions

STUDIO TOUR REPORT

This past month we had a Studio Tour at Sue Riddell’s beautiful work space...colorful, roomy, and very inviting.  She showed us her amazing quilts, purses, and hand made unique dolls.  We heard about her transition through her interests and what inspired her to find her passion.  We saw her various sewing machines; some of which I wasn’t familiar with at all.  We walked through her home looking at additional quilts she’d created.  The tour gave me personally a chance to find out more about another FASA member and to be reminded how talented so many of our members are.

Many seem to be interested in the Studio Tours, commenting often on what a good idea they are.  The artist spends a great deal of time getting ready for visitors, cleaning, organizing, and displaying pieces.  FASA members RSVP that they plan to attend.  Often the artist has coffee and some type of snack for those planning to be there.  We have two tours scheduled for spring.  Let’s make them worth everyone’s time and efforts.  Let’s show our member Studio Tour volunteers how much we truly want to see what they do and learn more about them.

FASA SPUTNIK UPDATE
SPUTNIK Meeting Minutes

Nov meeting will be Sunday the 11th at the SW School of Art to immerse ourselves in Sasha Duerr’s lecture at 2 pm.  If you are interested in carpooling, we are meeting at 1:30 at Jean Dahlgren’s studio at 240 East Huisache, SATX 78212.  http://www.sashaduerr.com/about/
The 14 Oct FASA Spirited, Passionate, Uninhibited, Thoughtful, Nurturing, Innovative, Kind (SPUTNIK) meeting adjourned at 2 pm, with a group of passionate artists, ready to share!
Several folks brought art they created in remembrance of Kitty Janiga.  A wonderful way to celebrate Kitty.  Thanks to all who helped get some of her stash to the FASA cobweb sale!

Calls for Entry:
·      Sacred Threads - October 1, 2018 - January 10, 2019 http://www.sacredthreadsquilts.com/default.htm
o  Quilts submitted should explore themes of joy, spirituality, peace/brotherhood, inspiration, grief, or healing.  Quilts must be an original design or an original execution of a traditional pattern.
o  Quilt should have a minimum perimeter of 80"and maximum of 288"(sum of all sides). (If your quilt is close to these dimensions but does not quite meet the requirements, you may still enter your work.)
o  Each quilt must have a 4" horizontal hanging sleeve and an identifying label on the back of the quilt. Quilts exhibited at previous Sacred Threads exhibits are not eligible.

Places to Shop-Learn-Show:
·       An artist went abroad to London and came back with a wonderful purse made from recycled men’s suits.  She visited the store “Suitcase” http://www.suitcase-london.com/  at Covent Garden Market https://www.coventgarden.london/markets/suitcase and picked up a wonderful purse to show us all.
·       An artist discussed “Threads of Strength” an anti-suicide young adult group but I can’t find any links on web for it.  Hopefully that person will read this and share more info on the FASA email tree.
·       A good place to thrift is Twice Blessed in San Marcos, lots of good stuff!  http://www.fumcsm.org/twice_blessed_consignment_store
·       An artist brought in her submission to the Storybook Quilt Group for the San Antonio Quilt Guild.  This project couples books with quilts with the librarian leading the story while the kids hold the quilt. http://www.sanantonioquilt.org/pages/Story.html
·       Lesta Frank is an artist and teacher.  She teaches a mixed media journaling class on Fridays for $40, all supplies included.  You can reach her at lestafrank@gmail.com
·       An artist discussed the fun to be found with old National Geographic pages and Citrasolv.  Be careful, Citrasolv can be toxic to some folks.  Lots of info on the web on how to do this.  https://www.citrasolv.com/altering-magazines-for-use-in-mixed-media/
·       An artist recommended attending any estate sales hosted by “A Better Estate Sale.”  Apparently as they near the end of the sale, they bundle items and hold an auction to sell off the last of the stuff.  https://www.abetterestatesale.com/
·        Speaking of estate sales, if you enjoy attending those, visit https://www.estatesales.net/ to find sales near you.
Discussion:
·      The African American Influences on San Antonio’s History Quilt Exhibit, went very well, go visit if you can.  https://www.sacurrent.com/sanantonio/telling-our-stories-african-american-influences-on-san-antonio-history/Event?oid=15400442
·      Artists showed altoid tin remakes, cigar box Nichos for Day of the Dead, and various art journal books.  An artist brought in a sample of some amazing fabric created using the suminagashi technique.  http://suminagashi.com/ We are totally going to see that again as a presentation in 2019.  It was FABULOUS work.  We also discussed Rosome https://www.surfacedesign.org/event/patterns-and-textures-in-rozome-japanese-wax-resist-with-kiranada-sterling-benjamin/
·
There will be a pop up store at the annual show – Jean Dahlgren will be putting out more details on it.
·
Kinectivities Members’ Installation is the next goal in front of us and we encouraged everyone to create something with movement mounted on a 12” x 12” x 1.5” canvas.  We need the canvas to be at least 1.5” deep to keep the hanging mechanisms hidden.  Michael’s is having a sale on canvas right now and the “Professional” level canvas is perfect for what we need.  We discussed dangles and decided no dangles off the bottom of the piece as it might interfere with anything placed below.  You can come off the canvas perpendicularly to make the piece 3D.  These pieces will be part of the December FASA Annual Show so need to be ready to install by Monday, Nov 26.  Several members brought in their completed Kinectivities art and they are wonderful!
·
Sunny Rakowitz is hosting a “Lifelines” workshop for the Children’s Transplant Organization.  She needs instructors for the Storylines techniques to teach the staff at the Transplant organization.   The events have been successful and seem to be taking off with the families.   At the last meeting there were 2 families with 3 lifelines in progress.  Contact her at sunneerakowitz@gmail.com if you can help.
·
The Diversity of Art book is submitted!
Hopefully it will make it into the juried annual show.   Regardless, we all had a great time making our pages and working as a team!
Presentation:
·
We didn’t have a presentation this time

SNIPPETS: Final notes & little tidbits of interest from your editor

So here's an easy little project that you can keep in a baggie to work on when you're traveling (well, maybe not the glue gun).

Just think of how much fun you'd have choosing colors for a series of these pins. Click here for the instructions. There are lots of other resources on this Stitch Floral site.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE . . .

Bonus Link: Natural Dye Materials from Dharma
If you're interested in trying natural dyes from plants and insects but don't want to pick your own leaves and bugs, check out the link on natural dyes fro Dharma Trading Company - they even have natural dye extracts like Pomegranate, Himalayan Rhubarb, and Madder.

The deadline for the FASA Newsletter is the 25th of each month. We'd love to have your news about shows, techniques, galleries, events - send an email to me if you'd like to be included!

Remember, fiber is good for you!
