From the "Doc"

”My daughter had a great time again this year. She came home full of joy, more centered/focused and more at peace. I attended Camp Concordia when I was her age (about 35 years ago); it's so special that we have this awesome shared experience. I am truly grateful for Camp Concordia and the amazing work you guys do there -- it's such a blessing. THANK YOU!!!” (Shelly Seguin - Allen Park, MI)

Full of JOY. Like a happy dance! In the October newsletter, I wrote briefly about Water Sports as a summer camp Add-on Option. We received a few replies from parents sharing how much their children enjoyed those experiences; however, the fact that we are a safe children's camp with a welcoming staff is even more important to families.

In my own childhood summer camp experience, I remember only a few activities - swimming and camping out (maybe this is true for your campers as well). I remember getting lost once (that was normal for me). But what I remember most is my cabin group counselor and the new friends I made that summer. Quality Christ-centered relationships are key components of a CC summer camp experience.

Each year as I go out on the road with invitations from Lutheran Schools to lead chapels and share about summer camp opportunities in Michigan, children often ask me if a specific summer ministry staff is returning to serve at camp. They remember how intriguing and happy those staff were to be around the campers. That relationship is important to your campers - your children. These summer ministry staff not only lead and play with the campers, they also present Jesus Christ and His forgiveness to them.

This summer I will send my own 10-year-old daughter to camp again. By having two staff in each cabin at night, she has a greater chance of having the experience the mom expressed in her email (top). This means as director, I must be busy hiring exceptional staff and I need your help.  Please direct someone you know to serve on Camp Concordia's staff during the 2019 season. These are paid and volunteer positions. You can go to our web page to see an overview of the entire summer schedule and join the happy dancing!

Camp Director

PS...Registration opens this Saturday, December 15, for those of you who have asked to make overnight summer camp a wide-eyed Christmas gift for your children, grand children, nephews or nieces!!

Swim Lessons Add-on Option

Camp Concordia introduced the Swim Lesson Add-on Option in 2017. How exciting to see summer campers work hard to learn basic swimming skills, and many go on to earn their deep water wrist band (green). Also, it is exciting to see college age summer ministry staff hard at work helping campers gain those new skills.  Staff too feel the victory when a camper gets their basic stroke. CC has been blessed to have Jr. Counselors, who are competitive swimmers, assist staff in helping campers gain these basic strokes.

In 2019, this Add-on Option is available with Journey, Quest, and Trails camp sessions. If your child already knows how to swim confidently, this is NOT for them.

2019 Family Camp

July 4-7 (Thursday-Sunday)

"We...[and our entire extended family], enjoyed our stay at Camp Concordia, July 5-8. It was such a homey quiet place where we enjoyed Gary Fascholtz lecture, the devotions, and the fellowship of Christian families. We pray that it might continue to be a place of spiritual and physical renewal for families and especially for children. God bless you." (Grand parent campers from the 2018 Family Camp)

What a unique opportunity for your family over the 4th of July. In 2019, Camp Concordia will have professor and author, Ben Freudenburg, and his family (including wife, adult children & grandchildren) leading family campers all in a variety of morning sessions (and more). Just a note - Ben wrote the book: Family Friendly Church published by Group Publishing.

Make plans now! Last summer the cabins were completely filled with families. So it is a good idea to sign up soon. RV and Temp Campsite options are also available. Registration is available beginning this Saturday, December 15.

Summer Ministry Staff

Have you ever walked around a corner and caught someone doing the happy dance? That's what is like serving as a summer ministry staff. Encourage a young adult you know to be a paid summer ministry staff in 2019.

For the 2019 summer season, Camp Concordia intends to hire:
  • 4 kitchen staff
  • 14 cabin group counselors (6 male, 8 female - 2 spots filled)
  • 1 maintenance & grounds person
  • 1 health officer (Position filled: can a health officer be nicknamed Pyro?)
  • 1 program coordinator (Position filled Mustard is returning!)
  • 1 events coordinator (Position filled: Do you know Skup?)
Your encouragement to young adults makes all the difference in them seeing themselves as valuable in this mentoring role with campers.

Camp Concordia works with NLOMA (National Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Association) for the initial steps in hiring summer ministry staff. Potential staff begin the application process by filling out a PROFILE with NLOMA. Go directly to the online PROFILE form here.
