Goodbye Sophie!

Sophie - one of Harvest's founding members - has left the co-op. Sophie is moving on to pastures new. She has been a fantastic member of the co-op, keeping our marketing and publicity going, writing beautiful signs, leading creative workshops, and bringing her bubbly personality to all of our meetings and the shop! We wish Sophie the best of luck, and know she will be missed by members and customers alike.

Harvest Mission and Values - your thoughts!

Now we have been running for approximately 18 months, and we know a little bit more about who we are! As a result our co-op has been working on our mission and values. Putting the marketing jargon aside this is what we do, and what we stand for. We would really like our customers thoughts, and get your feedback to see if these messages resonate with you.

In short Harvest Workers' Co-op:

“Bringing Good Mood Food to Okehampton. Growing, sharing, exploring.”

Who we are and what we do:

“We are a non-profit workers’ Co-operative made up of farmers, educators and storytellers. We grow and source good organic food for our little farm shop in Okehampton. We create opportunities for our community to explore all things food and farming and to celebrate Good Mood Food!”

What we care about:

  • Organic
  • Local & seasonal
  • Minimal packaging
  • Fair pricing – we look after our suppliers and customers
  • Treasured people – co-operation and consensus
  • Community
  • Happy animals
  • Wellbeing & nutrition

Events and Education

Harvest has been busy this autumn with a range of events with a focus on health and nutrition.  In early September we welcomed Diana Lee, a local herbalist, to give a talk in our shop. She gave a wonderful introduction to herbalism and some great take home tips. Sara (Harvest Member) also led an Introduction to Fermentation session in the EcoHub, Oke (pictured above).  Sara guided participants through the methods and benefits of fermenting food and the role beneficial microbes have in the process. Everyone got stuck into making their own ferments and enjoyed a shared lunch with a selection of the delicious creations.

On Friday 14th September we saw the return of our film and food nights. It was a well attended evening for the screening of We the Uncivilised, a life story of a couple looking for an alternative way to live. Later in September Harvest joined forces with The Cutting Edge conference in Crediton, an event organised by Devon County Council, focusing on food waste and prevention. Sara ran a practical fermentation session as one solution for food waste.

On Friday 5th October, Ellen McCallum, local naturopath, led an Autumnal Health session. Ellen explained how the seasons affect our organs and their functions, which foods and practices are of beneficial in which seasons and preparing our minds and bodies for Autumn and Winter. We shared interesting discussions, Ellen passed on helpful tips and we enjoyed a delicious roasted cauli dip. YUM!

Learn Devon partnership with Harvest: Family Workshops

We started our family workshops almost a year ago. Every fourth Saturday of the month we have followed the seasonal patterns of the year with cooking, creativity, gardening and storytelling. We are supported by Okehampton United Charities and now, very exciting, by Learn Devon! Seasonal Family Workshops are now free, thanks to this new partnership though donations are welcome. Booking through the Harvest Farm Shop or by email essential.

Changing seasons and new products

Wonderful Winter
It is a wonderful time of year when we have the start of all the delicious winter produce and the end of the summer produce. As pictured above, we have sprouts which have come a little early this year! They will be available throughout the winter. We have wonderful cauliflowers, romansescos and a continuous supply of root veg from Shillingford Organics (Exeter), the first of the purple sprouting, greens and wonderful salad from Hilltown Organics (Okehampton) and leeks, cabbage and beetroot from Down Farm (Winkleigh). We will continue to stock the summer produce - tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, celery etc -  but most of this will start to come from Spain. We try to source as much as possible locally, and then we look to the UK, but as winter comes it is not always possible to have a full array of produce from these sources alone. We always use suppliers that freight via sea than air and that share the same values as Harvest.
