Empowered Students Lead Community

Humanities Amped students are working to create change in their communities with a number of recent initiatives. On September 27, with the support of local partners, the Humanities Amped Leadership and Restorative Justice class provided an invaluable opportunity for Baton Rouge residents to hear from their school board candidates at a candidate forum and, as Lauryn Knight, Humanities Amped junior pictured below, explains, “get a chance to see how the candidate would solve some of the problems in their districts.” Lauryn further notes that the “forum was very important because most people don’t go to the polls and vote. Most are uneducated about the people running so this gives them some insight on what they [the candidates] will do for the districts.” Through organizing and leading events such as this candidate forum, Humanities Amped students are actively working to create solutions to problems they have identified in their community.

Humanities Amped students are also in the early stages of developing a Youth Council of students from throughout the East Baton Rouge Parish School District who will continue this work of identifying problems and developing solutions at the district level. Lauryn describes this council as “students leading education in the right direction” and explains that “students are the ones that have a first hand experience about the schools and the problem within them.” This collective, guided by and comprised of passionate young people and supported by the National Educators Association, will meet regularly to bring together the perspective of students from throughout the district to create a more equitable, effective educational experience for all students.

Lauryn expresses that she is interested in both leading events such as the Candidates Forum and participating as a member of the Youth Council because “I love building up my community” and because when the public sees “us putting on events such as these it shows them that we are more than high-school kids. We
are leaders with goals to have a
great community.” In regards to the support provided by Humanities Amped for these student initiatives, Lauryn presents as an example that “the program has boosted my public speaking tremendously!” and adds, “They support us so much. Whatever idea we have, they are open ears to hear about it. They have given me a family to go to.”
Supporters of Humanities Amped enable us to continue empowering students to apply intentional change to make their community better for everyone in it. We still need $2,400 to meet our program costs for this school year, and hope that you will consider donating or sharing our request to help provide the necessary funds for our students to effectively impact McKinley, Baton Rouge, and beyond.
