Blessings for furry friends

Churches across the Diocese of El Camino Real brought their pets large and small to be blessed during the past few Sundays. Here are some examples of the fun at St. Andrew's Saratoga (upper left, right, and lower right) and Church of the Good Shepherd near Salinas (upper right, lower left).

Gulf Coast churches in ‘rescue phase’ after Hurricane Michael

Episcopal churches on the Gulf Coast, including parts of Florida, Georgia and North and South Carolina, continue to assess Hurricane Michael’s damage, with some in the hardest hit coastal areas still in the rescue phase. Ten of the 11 damaged churches held services in one form or another on October 14; some were held inside the church buildings, while some were outdoors in pavilions.

On Oct. 10, Hurricane Michael made landfall near Panama City, Florida, as one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the mainland United States, killing 19 people. Five days later thousands of people remained without electricity.

The Episcopal Church of the Central Gulf Coast has created a Hurricane Relief Hub, listing ways to donate to hurricane relief efforts. The diocese also offers emergency preparedness and response resources. The diocese includes the Florida Panhandle and parts of southern Alabama. Inland communities were also affected by Hurricane Michael; some of them continue to recover from Hurricane Florence. The Diocese of East Carolina, which covers North Carolina’s coast, has issued an appeal for support.

“The local dioceses are continuing to assess the damage caused by the storm,” said Katie Mears, senior director of Episcopal Relief & Development’s U.S. Disaster Program, in a statement posted on its website. “Disasters have three phases: rescue, relief and recovery. We are prepared to support them as we move into the next phase of providing relief.” Donations can be made to Episcopal Relief & Development’s Hurricane Relief Fund here. Diocese offers diversity sensitivity training for church leaders

On November 3, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salinas will host a one-day training that will meet the requirements for “anti-racism” training required for all lay licenses and for local parish leaders, vestry, and more. Based on materials from the Kaleidoscope Institute, the training will start promptly at 10 am and end at 4 pm. Attending the full day is required to receive the certificate of completion of this training.

Pre-registration is required by October 28. Please email Joanna Shreve at jrshreve@aol.com with “Diversity Training” in the subject line. Include your full name and your church affiliation in the email. A $20 fee, to be paid on the day of the workshop, will cover the cost of materials and lunch. Anyone from across the diocese may attend this training. Other trainings in the Santa Clara Valley and San Luis Obispo are being planned for the first quarter of 2019. These trainings will also be open to everyone in the diocese.

Bishop search update:

Strong survey response, diocesan profile nearing completion

Thank you to all who participated in the survey and listening sessions across the diocese. There was a broad response -- over 600 respondents to the surveys, in English and Spanish, as well as a diverse attendance at 15 listening sessions spanning all deaneries, which included separate sessions for laity, deacons, priests, diocesan staff, and even an interview with Bishop Mary.

The Bishop Search Committee is currently compiling what we heard from the many voices in our diocese, along with other materials, into a diocesan profile, to give a picture of who we are, who we are called to be, and a vision of who we hope to call to walk with us. An announcement will go out shortly when the profile is posted on the diocesan website; we will then begin accepting nominations and applications for our fourth bishop.  Watch this space for details on how everyone in the diocese can continue to participate in the search.
-Your faithful servants from the Bishop Search Committee
