A Message from President Suzanne Greenberg

I was touched beyond words at the response to our call for a vigil following the massacre in Pittsburgh. In under 24 hours, folks united across cultural and religious lines to come together to make a stand against hatred and bigotry.

As Jews, feeling historically abandoned by much of the non-Jewish community in Europe is in our collective memory. The outpouring of love and support from our allies was thus even more powerful; people coming forward to grieve and stand with us was a firm contradiction that painful past. The beauty of all our faces and voices lit by flickering flames was palpable as person after person spoke from their hearts to say never again, not here.

We have much work ahead of us as Jews, as Vashonites, as Americans, and as citizens of this planet. Our country is on a dangerous path, and each of us must continue to take a stand every day to fight against racism, anti-Semitism, LBGTQ oppression, and bigotry of all flavors. We must all be allies to each other and unite in solidarity. Times are dark, but last Sunday, each person added a flicker of light to the darkness. The light will prevail.

B’Shalom,
Suzanne Greenberg

A Message from Rabbi Sarah Niebuhr Rubin

Friends and Members of the Vashon Havurah

I am heartbroken by the news from Pittsburgh, and have been thinking about what it means here on this side of the country.  We are Jews — and the Jewish community is small. Intimate.
The Havurah is a microcosm of that. I don’t know if others in the community have direct connections to Tree of Life in Pittsburgh. I am but two degrees from one of the victims. But it hardly matters how direct our connection. We are all part of one community...

Parashat Chayei Sarah  פרשת  חיי שרה
Genesis 24:53 − 25:18 (triennial portion 21:1 - 25:18)

Isaac and Rebecca

Our ancestor Sarah dies, and Abraham buries her body. He sends a servant to seek a wife for Isaac, and Rebecca enters the story -- an arranged marriage and a bond of love. "Old and contented", Abraham comes to the end of his life, and is buried next to Sarah by his sons Isaac and Ishmael -- a quiet and unexpected moment of reconciliation.

Everyone is welcome to join these rich discussions - no preparation required!

Ending the Silence
Mental Health Awareness Event
9am to 2pm
Saturday, November 10
Vashon Presbyterian Church
Vashon Presbyterian Church and Vashon Youth and Family Services are partnering to bring an event about Mental Illness, and how it impacts those who live in families where it is present.  For too long, mental illness has been the source of shame or embarrassment, and people who are going through it find themselves terribly isolated. The time has come to change this unfortunate situation and begin a greater acceptance and caring in our community.

Keynote speaker from Seattle NAMI
(National Alliance on Mental Illness):

Through this presentation, students/families get to see the reality of living with a mental health condition. During the 50-minute presentation, a young adult living with mental illness and a family member tell their stories about mental health challenges, including what hurt and what helped.

Workshop on Suicide Prevention: support for families living with mental illness (with the hope of creating a safe place for a support group here on Vashon).

Follow up to the keynote address: the NAMI speakers would be available to meet with folks who have further questions or needing more direction/help.

Cost: $10 per person includes a light lunch.
No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
