Beethoven V - Jam Session 28 October 2018

Beethoven was a fantastic improviser as well as a magnificent composer. Join us for a day of fun inspired by his 5th Symphony.

In our workshop we are focusing on the first movement and how to use a motive to improvise. Below you can see a first introductory video (more to come in the next few days!).

In the session there will be equal part concert by us, interaction with the audience and presentation of parts of the workshop. A new form of concert to bring together the audience and musicians.

Lately, several books have been devoted to improvisation in Beethoven's era, like Improvisation and open forms in the age of Beethoven.

Next Jam Sessions

We have already planned our last two sessions too. Come join us on December 9 for a session on the Bolero and on the 26th of January with the marvelous Robijn Tilanus. Robijn has written books and taught improvisation all over the world. With her warm demeanour, creative ideas and pedagogical insights it will be a final session and workshop not to be missed!

Improvisation course inspired by Mozart

I like things that are bigger than usually! This time I am teaching a two-day course, rather than just one day.
We will focus on Mozart's time and music. We will look at cadenzas of course, but also wonder whether you can add ornaments to Mozart? What did Mozart write his sister when she asked for help improvising preludes in her concerts? Did his father write something about this in his famous Violin book?

Two course days in Utrecht, 13 and 27th of January 2019. My idea of entry level is that you know what a major or minor chord is (e.g. A major means A C sharp and E); so it's not a much higher level than my usual courses :).

Fun at the Escher Museum

We had a lovely time at our second home the Escher Museum at museum night, a night where the museum stays open!
We performed our
Inventions programme 3 times and improvised with a percussionist.

Want to experience Escher in an entirely new way, with us accompanying you on a tour with improvised music?

Find out more here about this very special possibility.
