What Is Arts Research Brief

Diverse experiences, academic trajectories, and disciplinary backgrounds drive our understanding and interpretations of research, creative practice, and academic values. Despite its long and richly textured history, arts research is still relatively new to many academic departments and disciplines. For most practitioners, arts research is neither a formalized nor a codified process; it can take many paths. CAA Lists Cuts to Arts and Humanities and Releases Toolkit to Help

CAA highlights cuts to arts and humanities programs in higher education and releases guidelines and a toolkit in response. a2ru's research on the impacts of the arts on students, faculty, and research at the research institution helps build a response to the first recommended action item on CAA's list.

2019 Summit: Exploring Broader Impacts Through Connectedness

Deadline: November 28

This year’s summit explores the multiple layers of connections that are associated with broader impacts. Broader impacts through connectedness encompasses connections (internal and external) with and between individuals, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), social sciences, arts and humanities, research, practice, projects and programs, theories, resources, and local, state, national, and international communities. These connections seem infinite in number and dimensions. Find more details and submit a proposal.

Now Accepting Applications for 2019 Emerging Creatives Student Summit
Deadline: January 15 

The theme for the 2019 a2ru Emerging Creatives Student Summit is Food + Place. Food is the common language of life. Across the world, people use it to establish and maintain relationships and to celebrate important events. Food also frequently takes on a symbolic dimension in culture, representing everything from love to social status. Differing approaches to its production and consumption profoundly affect our economic systems, public health, and climate. Town Hall Meeting 
November 19, 2018
University of Wisconsin-Madison

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine staff Ashley Bear and Maria Dahlberg will discuss NASEM’s 2018 white paper The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. UW-Madison presenters include:

  • Meredith Mink, College of Letters & Science’s Constellations program, on demonstrating the relevance of the humanities to all majors and career trajectories by offering clusters of humanities courses for STEM students
  • Clare Haden, School of Nursing, and Amy Zelenski, School of Medicine and Public Health, on integrating/teaching acting and improvisational skills for more effective communication
  • Bayleigh Benner, Department of Bacteriology, and Holly Walter Kerby, Fusion Science Theater/Wisconsin Story Works, on their project “Gaining STEAM!: Illuminating science through art”

Idea Exchange at CAA 2019

CAA Idea Exchanges are a series of roundtable talks on a variety of topics led by leaders in the field. The talks are less formal than a session at the conference and are meant to address topics for discussion and open dialogue. Idea Exchanges will again be offered this year at the 2019 CAA Annual Conference and the submission portal is now open. CAA is looking for Idea Exchange topic leaders and ideas for talks.
