Dates Are Updated Weekly

It was the second storm of the week when 60 mph winds swept across 200 to 250 miles of open Lake Superior water to create massive waves crashing into the Tettegouche State Park shoreline.

The Crystal Bay cliffs measure from 35 to 50 feet and the spray rose well above that. Tettegouche State Park is my favorite location to photograph waves and it was mesmerizing to watch wave after wave crash into the shoreline.

Individual waves were documented up to 24 feet. About every 30 to 40 waves there would be a series of three larger ones. I tried to capture the third one which is nearly always the largest. Commercial fishermen call these the “Three Sisters”.

The rain was relentless. The waves’ spray, when mixed with the 60 mph winds, caused the rain mainly to travel horizontally. I soaked three different cloths trying to keep my lenses dry in order to get clear photos.
