News from the Notch

The application for the 2019 Coolidge Scholarship is now open. The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. This one-of-a-kind merit scholarship may be used at any accredited American college or university. The scholarship is open to current high school juniors. The application portal can be accessed here. The deadline to submit applications is Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 5:00 PM EST.

Now in its fourth year, the Coolidge Scholarship honors President Coolidge and plays a critical role in achieving the Coolidge Foundation’s mission of sharing the lessons and values of Calvin Coolidge with all Americans. Although some high school history texts may give insufficient attention to President Coolidge, you can be sure that America's top high schoolers will learn about #30 when they apply to the Coolidge Scholarship. This year’s application requires that students read the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge and write multiple essays, two of which relate to Coolidge values and policy.

Last year, over 23,000 students from all 50 states registered in the online application portal, and over 3,200 submitted complete applications. When considering the adults who also learn about Coolidge - including parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and letter writers - the annual reach of the Coolidge Scholarship is easily in the many tens of thousands. We look forward to sharing Coolidge further in our 2019 scholarship competition, and hope you'll help us spread the word to any potential candidates you may know.

"The Real Calvin Coolidge"

Now Available in Digital Format
We are pleased to announce The Real Calvin Coolidge periodical series is now available free in digital format online.

The Real Calvin Coolidge is a series of booklets published by the Coolidge Foundation from 1983 to 2005. Comprised of eighteen volumes, The Real Calvin Coolidge offers insights into the life of our thirtieth president, and features a variety of articles written by historians, Plymouth Notch locals, Coolidge family members, and others who knew and were influenced by Coolidge. Earlier issues even featured commentary by the president's wife, Grace Coolidge.

These booklets have been digitized by Coolidge Foundation archivist John Ferrell, and are uploaded here, along with an index to assist researchers and casual readers alike. This is the latest addition to the Coolidge Foundation's collection of digital resources, and a further commitment to increasing Americans’ understanding of President Coolidge and the values he promoted.
An Evening for Free Speech

Annual Coolidge Gala

December 10, 2018 | New York City

In October of 1925, President Coolidge stood before the American Legion Convention in Omaha and, in making the case for toleration, argued that vigorous debate was essential for a flourishing society. The President declared: "Whatever tends to standardize the community, to establish fixed and rigid modes of thought, tends to fossilize society. [...] It is the ferment of ideas, the clash of disagreeing judgments, the privilege of the individual to develop his own thoughts and shape his own character, that makes progress possible."

We invite you to join us the evening of Monday, December 10, 2018 at the Union League Club in New York City for our Annual Coolidge Gala.  This year's gala honors President Coolidge's commitment to intellectual freedom and features keynote remarks from free speech champion Robert J. Zimmer, president of the University of Chicago. President Zimmer will be introduced by Hon. Kurt L. Schmoke, president of the University of Baltimore and a trustee of the Coolidge Foundation.

Gala details are below. For ticket information, please contact Rob Hammer, Coolidge Foundation program manager, at rhammer@calvin-coolidge.org or (802) 672-3389, Ext. 114
