Statistically Speaking
The Research & Statistics Review
Issue 6, October 2018

Welcome to our latest addition of Statistically Speaking!

The Research and Statistics team have recently been granted resources for a two-year project as part of the evaluation of the Renewal and Reform programme. This funding will cover three projects: a congregational survey (to be known as The Big Church Survey), a project to better understand the wealth of lay ministry taking place in our churches, and a project looking at fresh expressions and how they develop over time. We have recruited extra staff to help us with the work, and so we welcome Alan and Sam to the team. Charlotte Sibtain (C1) is the project manager for The Big Church Survey and we have already started work and are planning a pilot in the spring 2019.  We plan to begin work on the other two projects in the next two months and are currently setting up the project teams to help guide us through these projects.

Please contact me if you would like to know more about these projects (

Data data everywhere!

We have had plenty of opportunities for statistical speaking over the past few months, thanks to our annual “Chats for Mission” with dioceses, the final step in the process of checking the annual church attendance and participation figures.

After querying unusual-looking figures with churches and making estimates where necessary – based on returns from previous years – we sent draft figures to dioceses in July. Since then, we have spoken to (almost) every diocese, checking that there are no wonky numbers that slipped through, no exciting new churches that we’re missing, and no large churches that we’ve not heard anything from for so long that we’ve assumed they have closed. Equally important is the chance to find out about how dioceses are using their churches’ data and the resources that we provide, and to hear ideas for changes to what we do. We are always open to suggestions!

This is the third year we’ve had these conversations, as part of our efforts to work as effectively as possible with dioceses. These conversations feed into the planning for our thrice-yearly diocesan stats days, so things are joining up nicely.

Looking beyond the details, what’s the point of all of this work? So that everyone who can benefit from it (which means people in churches, people with diocesan roles, and the national church) knows what information is available, knows how to use it, and can make decisions based on the best possible information. Simple!

Faith in Research - Call for papers!
We will be holding our next Faith in Research conference on
Wednesday 19th June 2019 in Birmingham.

If you would like to speak at the conference then please send a short abstract of your proposed research to charlotte.sibtain@churchofengland.org by Friday 16th November.

Meet the newest members of the team!
Sam Nunney

What were you doing before you joined the Research & Statistics unit?
I was in Cardiff doing my PhD in psychology (fingers crossed it’ll be passed soon!)

What are you most looking forward to while working in the Research & Statistics unit?
During the first few weeks there’s been a lot of cake around, so a continuation of that would be nice!

What luxury item would you take to a desert island?
Lots and lots of suncream!

Charlotte Hall
Ok, so technically she is not new but she has changed roles within the team!

Charlotte (aka C2) is now a Statistical and Mapping Researcher. She is still based with the Research and Stats team but will spend 3 days a week working on all things mapping with our resident mapping expert, Geraldine.

We asked C2 a couple of questions.......

What are you most looking forward to about working in the mapping team?
Having a legitimate reason to spend my time trying to decipher old maps and books!

What luxury item would you take to a desert island?

Mp3 player full of my favourite music

What did you want to be when you were little?

A ballerina

Alan Piggott

Going to watch Bridge of Spies (Tom Hanks) this weekend, to help my daughter with her Cold War revision

Ministry update!

As you may be aware, we recently published Ministry Statistics 2017. In case you’re unfamiliar, the publication explores various characteristics of the 20,000 active clergy serving the Church of England (as at the end of 2017), ordinands beginning training in 2017 and those that left active ministry in 2017 (for example, through retirement or to pursue job roles outside of ordained clergy).

Alongside this, for the second year running we have prepared an individual projections report for each diocese, which will be disseminated to dioceses over the coming weeks by our colleagues in Ministry Division. These are designed to help dioceses in their future ministry planning, by outlining the likely joiners (based on ordinands currently in training) and leavers (based on current age profile and historic retirement trends), over the next few years - both in the diocese and nationally.

The report, and related documents (including data tables and commentary provided by The Venerable Julian Hubbard, Director of Ministry), can be accessed on our webpage. We are currently preparing for the 2018 data collection and analysis, so please do get in touch if you have any queries or comments that can be fed in.

Diocesan Statistics Day

We recently held 2 diocesan statistics days for our statistically minded diocesan colleagues. The days have proved to be a great way for people to come together and share what they have been doing with the statistics in their diocese. This year we had sessions on 'Engaging parishes', 'Finance data' 'Manipulating data with Excel' and 'Data visualisation'. The days were really engaging and we hope that those attending enjoyed them as much as we did!
