Life-Long Learning

Children learn naturally, with the very air they breathe. Each day holds new adventures, new discoveries, new lessons learned and new skills mastered. As we grow older some things, such a learning a new language, become more difficult and require more effort on our part, and on the part of our teachers and mentors. Yet if we ever cease learning, we stop growing, and settle for just marking time on earth, until the day we die. But we are not condemned to fly around in circles in a holding pattern, sipping our coffee or soda as we await receive clearance for our final landing. Life is a gift, an adventure. Whether learning takes place at home, at school, at church (see the inauguration of this year's Sunday School program at our church in Wroclaw), or on the job, growing teaching and mentoring others should never cease.

As teachers and mentors at the Evangelical School of Theology, we participate with our students in the life-long tasks of learning and of mentoring others. Together with a fellow faculty member Joel recently  conducted entrance interviews for new candidates. Overall, 25 new students began their studies at EST this month. Joel also sat on the examination committees for several students who defended their senior theses. Altogether 12 students successfully completed this final step and became graduates of EST. In between one event and the other lies four years of reading, study, lectures, seminars, and practical ministry internships.

A recent trip to visit friends reminded us again of why we do what we do. Janusz and Joanna Żydek, both graduates of EST, continue to learn as well as to teach others. In addition to serving as church planters in Chorzów, they teach students and couples principles of healthy family life. Joel got to preach. and there were 22 adults plus children at the morning service.

Summer of 2018: Prayer and Praise:

We planned a family vacation this summer and made housing arrangements in Croatia in advance. We looked forward to this trip with all our children, yet as the months passed Haley still had not received her Polish visa and so could not travel outside the country. Thanks to prayer, the intervention of our pastor, and a very helpful official who processed Haley’s application, she received her visa the day before we were to leave on vacation! We are so glad that Haley and Erik could join the rest of the family for a very memorable time together.

While hiking in Croatia Joel injured his foot. The pain was so bad he could not walk, and it seemed likely that he had broken a bone. Prayer and pain killers allowed a measure of sleep, and by the morning his foot was much better. By evening he was able to join the family on a short walk to see the Roman Colosseum in Pula. Soon he was walking normally again!

Just as we have seen God’s care for our health, we are trusting him for our financial needs. We are currently $800/month short of full support. As you pray for this need, please prayerfully consider sending a one-time gift or making a new or increased commitment.

Yours in Christ,

Joel and Renata
