School Board Recognition Week
The New York State School Boards Association recognizes October 22-26 as School Board Recognition Week, a time to promote awareness and understanding of the important work performed by school board members.
Heuvelton Central School joins with public school districts across the state to celebrate School Board Recognition Week to honor local board members for their commitment to Heuvelton and its children.
Our school board members volunteer their time, often for years on end, to help ensure our school is helping every child learn. Their devotion to learning about education issues and their willingness to make tough decisions is commendable.
Mindful Minute
Our counselors are encouraging classroom teachers to use "mindful minutes." "Mindfulness reliably and profoundly alters the structure and function of the brain to improve the quality of both thought and feeling." Below is a link to a video which provides an example of a mindful minute.

Staff Day Success
Staff had a great day of learning and collaborating during staff day!
Individual Student Reports
Individual student reports based on the grades 3-8 math and ELA assessments were sent home this week. Parents can contact their child's teacher if they have any questions regarding the reports.
Did You Know? ESSA and 3-8 Assessments
Under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, states must assess and measure student achievement. State assessment results are used to help:
• Parents learn about their children’s academic achievement;
• Teachers understand how well students are learning what is being taught;
• School, district, and state education leaders determine what is and is not working well; and
• Stakeholders identify achievement gaps that may be forming among different student populations.
When too few students participate or complete state assessments, it’s harder for educators to recognize gaps and provide extra support to the students who need it the most. Students who do not do well on a state assessment, or who are not on track to become proficient in ELA, math, science, and/or social studies can qualify for extra instructional support, guidance counseling, attendance improvement services, and help with study skills.
