Group named for I-20 at Savannah River and Augusta Canal Bridge Replacement Project
ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) named Superior Construction Company/WSP the apparent successful proposer for the I-20 at Savannah River and Augusta Canal bridge replacement project today at One Georgia Center.
The best-value procurement is moving forward under the first bi-state design-build agreement between Georgia and South Carolina, estimated at $90 million.
“The industry exhibited strong interest and innovation in pursuit of this important project, leading to many alternative technical approaches that will likely save time and money,” Darryl VanMeter, Georgia DOT’s Assistant P3 Division Director, said. “The best-value procurement was designed with both Georgia and South Carolina objectives in mind. This collaboration will benefit both states immensely.”
Five shortlisted finalists were announced in June 2018 after nine proposers submitted Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) packages in May for evaluation by Georgia DOT: Superior Construction Company Southeast/WSP; Flatiron/Parsons Transportation Group; Johnson Brothers/FIGG; Scott Bridge Company/Michael Baker; and United Infrastructure Group/Infrastructure Consulting and Engineering.
The project will replace the existing I-20 Augusta Canal and Savannah River bridges built in the 1960s with new, modern structures to improve safety and operations for nearly 70,000 daily drivers. The existing bridges provide two travel lanes in each direction with two-foot shoulders separated by an open median. The replacement will provide three, 12-foot lanes in each direction with matching 12-foot inside and outside shoulders.
I-20 will also be widened from four travel lanes to six from the Georgia Welcome Center to W. Martintown Road in Aiken County, S.C. Both the bridge replacement and interstate widening are scheduled for completion in three years once construction activities are authorized.
Through design-build, or DB, project delivery methods, Georgia DOT is accelerating the replacement of bridges across the state. DB allows pre-construction related services, such as processing permits and design, to occur concurrently with construction and under a single contract. This method benefits the public by reducing construction times, mitigating travel impacts, and maximizing the use of resources and project budget.
