We Are Family

“We are family.” That is how camp staff begin and end each day at Indian Creek Camp.  As a camp staff, we take time each day to remind ourselves of that one central theme.  At the beginning of the summer, it can sometimes come across more as a team-building motivation, but as the summer continues on, we realize that there is more truth to that statement than we first realized.  We rejoice in each others’ victories.  We are there to lift each other up during difficult days, and we all celebrate together when we see young people make decisions for Jesus.

This past summer was my 8th summer as a camp director.  This summer was a little different for me, however.  I went into the summer knowing that my father did not have a lot of time left on this earth.  For years, he had been battling cancer, and it had recently spread to his liver.  As things got worse, I decided that I soon would need to go and be with him.

It was at this time that something happened that I will never forget.   Our camp pastor was sick and so I ended up speaking for our family camp church service.  Shortly after the message, as I was about to dismiss for lunch, one of our family campers walked to the front of the stage.  Almost in tears, he asked for the entire camp to circle around my family to pray for God’s peace and comfort during our difficult time.

That is when it hit me.  The beauty of camp is not just creating a family environment for our staff, but it is creating a family environment for our campers.  Though I was there to serve them, they served me.  Though I had planned to spiritually feed them, they fed me.  In all my years of ministry, I have never felt such love, compassion and support.  Once the prayer ended and I wiped a few tears from my eyes, one simple phrase came to my mind, “This is family.”

Cuba Mission Trip
The KYTN Youth Department is organizing a Mission trip for college students to Cuba on June 19 through July 2. Space is limited to 15 people. The cost is $1600. Students will be joining the Nationals in a week of Evangelism in Central Cuba (Camagüey and Santa Clara).

Please pray for this trip, the mission and the students attending. Also, you can help to lower the cost for the students by making a tax-deductible donation to the "Cuba Mission Trip." Make your check payable to KY-TN Conference. We hope to hire 15 local Bible workers for 6 months, as well as, several local interpreters. Additionally,  transportation is very expensive. Also, you can contribute to particular student accounts as you come aware of their interest in attending (donations for a particular individual are not tax deductible).

The first non-refundable payment of $200 is needed by December 15 in order to guarantee your place. Prayerfully consider attending or encouraging a young person to attend.

Commitment Weekend SAU

On September 7-9, the youth directors from the Southern Union attended a traditional weekend in Southern Adventist University to remind the students of their commitment to follow Jesus Christ and the importance of engaging in local Ministry. It began with a Friday Night vesper, followed with "The Great Haystack" on Sabbath after the church service and ended with Sunday morning pancake breakfast.
Power Mission Trip
On September 26-29, 75 students and sponsors from Highland Academy, Madison Academy and Spring Valley Academy attended the POWER mission trip to Eastern Kentucky.  Students participated in renovating camp grounds, restoring a house for teenage moms, repairing homes, building playgrounds and much much more!

Adventist Christian Fellowship

Schools have already started. Our missionary student leaders are already engaged in the local campuses. Some have already started, while others are in need of young people to step up and churches to support them. Would you pray for this ministry success, the young people leading them and the 80%+ of the SDA youth attending public campuses?
